Skype a school

Dear all,

We are looking for a polar expert to spare a little time to skype a school in the US.

The class is 6th grade (students are around 11-12 years old), and they have been studying Antarctica in geography. They participated in our UKPN Antarctica flags scheme, designing flags and sending them off to with scientists. Now, they just got a webcam and are really enthusiastic to have a quick chat.

If you’re interested, please reply to education@polarnetwork.org. Great international outreach experience, and only a one-off so it won’t take up much of your time!

Thanks,

Holly

Education and Polar Science in Action - Cambridge 2019

Hi everyone,

A great workshop/event is coming to Cambridge this year led by Polar Educators International and in partnership with us here at UKPN as well as SPRI, BAS and SCAR.

https://polareducator.org/events/conferences/cambridge-2019/

The conference runs 8-11th April 2019 (flyer attached) and is a chance for researchers and educators to come together and discuss how we communicate science and connect people with the poles. There are plans for some great workshops on science communication, as well as a chance for you to pitch your research ‘elevator pitch’ and get feedback from educators as to how to make it better for the general public/school kids etc. It should be a great opportunity to form some new networks, and if you’ve any budding outreach ideas, an ace way to get some feedback and develop those ideas. They’ll be folks from SPRI, SCAR and BAS there too.

Registration for this is now open – see the Eventbrite page here :)

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/pei-2019-education-and-polar-science-in-action-registration-50821391149

Early bird price until 14th January

They’re also looking for some volunteers to help with set up/registration (you’ll still be able to participate fully in the conference). Should be another chance to open up more networking opportunities and they’ll be funding available to support volunteers. Get in touch with lead organiser Sophie Weeks (sophie.weeks@gmail.com) if you’re interested in being a volunteer.

Please pass onto your networks too,

Cheers

Anna

FW: For UKPN Please - Funded PhD Studentship: Impact of Arctic snow on soil and sea ice

Please see below an Arctic PhD opportunity.

Hi All –

We are currently advertising a funded three year PhD studentship in "Impact of Arctic snow on soil and sea ice". I would be grateful if you could bring this to the attention of suitable students.

Project description:

The thermal properties of Arctic snow play a vital role in mediating energy exchanges between the atmosphere and tundra soils or sea ice. Thick snowpacks with low thermal conductivity will insulate the substrate during cold winters leading to warmer soils and thinner sea ice. Thin snowpacks with high thermal conductivity have the opposite effect.

Permafrost active layer dynamics as well as sea ice formation and duration are therefore strongly controlled by the mass and properties of overlying seasonal snow. However, our understanding of spatial variability in snow properties and snow mass is poorly constrained in Arctic environments, principally as we are strongly limited by current remote sensing capabilities and accurate retrieval of snow mass. This project will allow you to explore ways of removing these limitations through measurements and modelling for future development in snow remote sensing:

1.            Measurements of snow properties and snow mass from a wide range of tundra and sea ice environments will allow you to create a much-needed robust quantification of variability in Arctic snowpack properties. Opportunities will be made available for you to add to these measurements yourself as part of international field campaigns in Arctic environments (e.g. Trail Valley Creek, NWT, Canada).

2.            Recent advances in modelling of snowpack structure (e.g. Flexible Snow Model) and microwave radiative transfer in snow (e.g. Snow Microwave Radiative Transfer model) will allow you to explore and develop new approaches to spatially distributed simulation of Arctic snow that will directly feed into development of future low-cost satellite mission ideas.

You will be supported to develop your numerical modelling skills, e.g. using high performance computing, and your analyses will feed into international multidisciplinary networks of modelling and monitoring Arctic environmental change. This is a collaborative project externally co-supervised by Dr Chris Derksen (Environment and Climate Change Canada / University of Waterloo, Canada) and Dr Mel Sandells (CORES Science and Engineering Ltd, UK).

Start Date: 1 March 2019 (application deadline is 4 January 2019) or 1 October 2019 (application deadline is 1 July 2019)

Interview Date: if 1 March 2019 start would be week commencing 21 January 2019 (via Skype)

*** If a suitable candidate is identified in the first round of applications, then any applications received after 4 January 2019 will not be taken forward ***

Funding Notes:

The studentship includes a full stipend, paid for three years at RCUK rates (for 2018/19, this is £14,777 pa), as well as a research and training support budget. The studentship includes fees for Home/EU and International students. This is a collaborative project with University of Waterloo, Canada.

FREE Metabolomics Online MOOC

Metabolomics: Understanding Metabolism in the 21st Century
19 November - 14 December 2018
*FREE online MOOC*

Overview
Metabolomics is an emerging field that aims to measure the complement of metabolites (the metabolome) in living organisms. The metabolome represents the downstream effect of an organism's genome and its interaction with the environment. Metabolomics has a wide application area across the medical and biological sciences. The course provides an introduction to metabolomics, describes the tools and techniques we use to study the metabolome and explains why we want to study it. By the end of the course you will understand how metabolomics can revolutionise our understanding of metabolism.

Course Syllabus
  • Metabolism and the interaction of the metabolome with the genome, proteome and the environment
  • The advantages of studying the metabolome
  • The application of hypothesis generating studies versus the use of traditional hypothesis directed research
  • The use of targeted and non-targeted studies in metabolomics
  • An interdisciplinary approach with case-studies from clinical and environmental scientific areas
  • Important considerations in studying the metabolome
  • Experimental design and sample preparation
  • The application of mass spectrometry in metabolomics
  • An introduction to data processing and analysis
  • Metabolite identification

  • Level
The course is primarily aimed at final year undergraduate science students and research scientists who are interested in learning about the application of metabolomics to understand metabolism. However, metabolomics is a new tool to the scientific community and this course will provide a valuable introduction to scientists at any stage in their careers. It is not essential to have any previous knowledge of the subject area but a reasonable knowledge and understanding of science would be beneficial.
