Hi,

You are cordially invited to the 2016 UK sea ice workshop which is supported as a special interest group of the challenger society (http://www.challenger-society.org.uk/). The workshop is an informal meeting of those working in the broad subject of sea ice (both hemispheres), and takes the form of short presentations, posters and discussion - an opportunity to meet up with others in the field.

This year's meeting will be held in the Department of Earth Sciences at UCL on Tuesday 20th September (13:00 - 18:00) and Wednesday 21st September (09:00 - 13:00).

In addition to the usual UK sea ice format we will be hosting a follow on session Wednesday 21st September (14:00 - 18:00) open to the public + media where we invite participants to reflect on the September 2016 sea ice minimum.

If you wish to attend and/or present at the workshop please email me (m.tsamados@ucl.ac.uk) by August 1st. If presenting please send me a title and a preference for oral/poster (posters should be A0 - portrait style).

Attendees are responsible for booking their own accommodation.

We hope to see you all there,

Regards

Michel

PS: please circulate this message to anyone you think might be interested in attending
PPS: if you wish to be removed from this list please let me know.

You are cordially invited to:

UCL IRDR Public Panel Discussion - 8 June - Development in the Arctic: Risks and Rewards

18:00 – 19:30 G08 Lecture Theatre, Roberts Building, UCL followed by a drinks reception

Guy Yeomans – Arctic Futures
Nina Poussenkova – Sampo, Moscow
Kaj Riksa – Total E&P

Climate change and technological advances are opening up the Arctic for exploitation by the world - or so we are told. But what do we really know about development risks and rewards in the far north? What realities of Arctic environmental conditions are rarely described? What Arctic social and political conditions are frequently bypassed? What about the people who live in the region who have rights and interests?

Join us for this panel discussion to explore the risks and rewards regarding the so-called 'Arctic Gold Rush' for resources and development.

The event is free to attend but you will need to register.

Cycle your way to the UK Antarctic Conference!

Hellooo fellow lovers of the polar regions!

Ever wondered about the impact of your research? How many people have read that ground breaking research of yours on climate change and are choosing to adopt a more sustainable way of life? Hopefully, lots! But what about your actual impact, and your carbon emissions - all those international flights to meetings and conferences, the endless number of cable ties used when deploying your kit at sea, and the countless plastic sample tubes? Perhaps a good way to inspire change is to lead by example and think about how to reduce the carbon footprint of your own research.

So how do you fancy taking part in a little challenge? For those attending the UK Antarctic Science conference in Norwich, have you thought about the most fun, healthy and sustainable way to get there? On your trusty bike! I will be cycling to the conference from my home in Basingstoke, and will be picking up some fellow oceanographers in Cambridge on the Sunday (July 3rd) on my way through. So join us! Or grab your friends and start your own cycle from your own home. There's no doubt it will be fun and involve a few scenic accidental detours in lovely British countryside! Or if you live in lands far far away, just think about the best way to get there, can you get a bus or train, or at least sort a car share.

Get in touch with me (A.Belcher@noc.soton.ac.uk), if you're keen to be part of the UK Antarctic conference cycling effort (UEA are very much behind this and want an idea of numbers - what better way to make a name for yourself in science ;) ).

Right, back to writing that thesis!
