Location: Online - Zoom

Dear Sir/Madam

I am emailing on behalf of a current FCDO-funded project titled 'Building, enabling and valuing UK-Russian research capacity to address climate change effects on Arctic marine ecosystems' headed by Principal Investigator Prof. Martin Solan at the University of Southampton. We are excited to invite you to a two-day scientific workshop on Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th March.

Wednesday 17th March: This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn about the Project's activities, discover the scientific work carried out at the Discovery Collections and join in on our discussions into the future of Arctic science. We wish to invite Russian and UK scientists with valuable experience in the fields of Arctic, marine and coastal ecosystems and climate science.

Thursday 18th March: This workshop is a training session for the design, set-up and statistical analysis of climate change and biodiversity experiments. The workshop will have guest speakers discussing current UK-Russia collaborative projects, as well as two training talks from experienced researchers on designing biodiversity and ecosystem scenarios. There will be a Q&A and a section committed for future collaboration ideas.

Workshop discussions will involve examining the current and future ecological consequences of climate change over the Arctic. Discussion topics include but not limited to: understanding the complexities in biodiversity responses; reviewing current "hotspots" of scientific activity; evaluating future research needs.

Both workshops will be live in both Russian and English, facilitated by translators. The workshop will be in the format of a remote meeting on the Zoom platform and would last approximately 180 mins.

If you are interested, please sign up using this link. We will forward you the relevant zoom link. We would be delighted to have you join us at the workshop.

Best wishes,

"Spin top Arctic Ocean=?Windows-1252?Q?=94_?=Town Hall Meeting at ASSW 2021

Hello people,

This is an announcement for the ASSW2021 townhall meeting "Spin top Arctic Ocean". We will discuss the Arctic Ocean in its future open state and aim to create a community paper, all welcome and you can still add discussion points.

Regards,

Stefanie

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Spin top Arctic Ocean"

Town Hall Meeting at Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2021

23 March 2020, 16:00-18:00 GMT

online

This "all hands on deck" call is aimed to review our understanding of the future Arctic Ocean as an open ocean, to identify the gaps in this understanding and draw a roadmap how these can be closed. Given the Arctic Ocean will be open for the most part of the year, what will it be like with accelerated ocean currents, energetic eddies and waves? How will the open state affect the other components of the system?

The planned meeting outcome is a community paper to facilitate the UN Ocean Decade initiatives starting this year. More details about the meeting will be soon available at: https://assw2021.pt/?accao=detailedprogram and https://assw2021.pt/?accao=businessprogram#cbp=business-program/34open-23.html

Tentative discussion points:

  • Seasonally ice-free Arctic and "new" regimes of large-scale ocean circulation
  • Accelerated ocean currents at meso- and submesoscales
  • Enhanced ocean mixing (via more efficient near-inertial and tidal internal wave generation, etc.)
  • Energetic wind waves…

We welcome everybody to suggest prospective discussion points to be raised during the THM, so that we could elaborate a more detailed THM plan together.

Please add your suggestions to the list of Tentative discussion points above

preferably by 15 March 2021 in this google doc:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZE08HVje6FGK5BZvW5jb-pvpKosq3KW-cLfLWs0xQrs/edit?usp=sharing

Please note that to participate in the meeting you need to register to the Arctic Science Summit Week 2021 online conference for the "business meetings and interim day" at https://assw2021.pt and pay the conference fee.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EU-FUNDED POLAR RESEARCH SKILL TRAINING

World Ocean Council (WOC) Invites Young Polar Research Scientists and Technicians to Online Training to Improve Technical Skills for Working On Research Icebreakers

10 March 2021

The World Ocean Council (WOC) is a partner of the Arctic Research Icebreaker Consortium (ARICE). This Horizon 2020 EU-funded project has the overall aim to provide Europe with better capacities for marine-based research in the ice-covered Arctic Ocean.

Polar Impact Mentorship Survey: Action Requested

Hello,

The Polar Impact Network is seeking to establish a mentor/mentee program that focuses on mentorship within the polar sciences and polar communities across the world, and would value your input on a survey put together by one of our volunteers.

This anonymous survey aims to better understand how the needs of mentors and mentees are (not) met in existing mentor/mentee programs, both within and outside of the academy, with particular emphasis on how success or failure can intersect with participants' racial/ethnic identity, gender, sexual orientation, and other personal and/or professional factors.

Results will not only be used to inform how Polar Impact structures the framework for our future mentorship program, but also to provide resources for existing programs that will help improve accountability, accessibility, and efficacy in mentorship of members of BIPOC/BAME/URM communities.

If you are interested in participating in this upcoming program, there is an option to add your email at the end of the survey.

Note: this email will be linked to your answers. While this identifying information will be available only to the creator of the survey (Emily Schwans), should you prefer to retain total anonymity while expressing interest, please leave the email query blank and send an email to eps5217@psu.edu (cc: hello@polarimpactnetwork.org) after completing the survey.

We ask that you forward this survey to students/colleagues/technicians/community leaders who may have a unique perspective to provide, and thank you for any input that will help us better serve individuals affiliated with the wider polar community.

Thank you,

The Polar Impact Mentorship Initiative Organizers
