(Virtual) film festival for Polar Week

Hi,

USAPECS is organising a virtual film festival during the upcoming Polar
Week (end of September):

http://usapecs.wix.com/usapecs#!polar-film-festival/usqor

They are inviting submissions of films in four categories (cryosphere,
biology, humans, climate) and the idea is that we arrange virtual or
in-person viewings of some of these films. I'm sure we could organise
some in-person evening events at UK universities! They are looking for
submissions by 15 August.

Polar Climate Scientist postdoc vacancy at British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Polar Climate Scientist with a geophysical background and an interest in statistical modelling to support a UK NERC grant-funded project: 'Robust Spatial Projections of Real-World Climate Change'. This is a large consortium grant led by collaborators at the University of Exeter. The BAS post aims to understand model projections of climate change at both poles and implications for global climate.

The post is an exciting opportunity for a numerate geophysicist to work on a wide-ranging project, calculating sea ice budgets from climate models and using observations to improve model projections of 21st Century polar climate change.

To be successful in this role, you must have strong data-processing skills, a background in climate dynamics/processes and an interest in statistical modelling. Working closely with world-leading scientists at the universities of Oxford, Reading, Exeter and East Anglia, as well as the Met Office, you will need to have excellent communication skills and be able to manage your time efficiently to meet objectives and deadlines.

This 4-year post is an excellent opportunity for a geophysicist who is fascinated by climate dynamics and statistical modelling to contribute to state-of-the-art projections of polar climate change as part of a high-profile UK project.

For more information go to https://www.bas.ac.uk/jobs/vacancy/polar-climate-scientist-cambridge/ or contact Tom Bracegirdle (tjbra@bas.ac.uk) or Paul Holland (pahol@bas.ac.uk). The deadline for applications is on 17 July.

Physical Oceanography postdoc vacancy at British Antarctic Survey

The British Antarctic Survey is seeking a physical oceanographer to work on an exciting, multi-institute programme investigating the export of dense waters that form around Antarctica. The post holder will work with data from a large array of oceanographic moorings that have been deployed at the northern edge of the Weddell Sea, and will conduct analyses that inform on the throughflow and mixing of these waters as they enter the lower limb of the Atlantic overturning circulation.

This is a 22-month postdoc position, including participation in a Southern Ocean research cruise in March-April 2017, to be conducted from RRS James Clark Ross. The post holder will be based at BAS Cambridge, and the role will involve collaboration with leading scientists from the University of Southampton, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and GFDL Princeton.

Further details can be found at

https://www.bas.ac.uk/jobs/vacancy/physical-oceanographer-moorings-cambridge/

The deadline for applications is 24 July, with interviews scheduled to take place on the week of 8 Aug; we hope the successful candidate can start on 1 Dec.

Potential candidates are very welcome to contact Povl Abrahamsen (epab@bas.ac.uk) or Mike Meredith (mmm@bas.ac.uk) with any questions about the role.
