This email was sent to you by someone outside the University.

You should only click on links or attachments if you are certain that the email is genuine and the content is safe.

Dear Colleagues,

Registration is now open for the International Glaciological Society British Branch (IGSBB) and the UK Antarctic Science Conference (UKASC) from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2022, hosted at the University of Edinburgh.

The IGSBB is an informal two-day meeting at which presentations are welcome on all aspects of ice and snow research, while the UKASC welcomes contributions on any aspect of Antarctic Science. We strongly encourage early-career researchers, including postgraduate students, to attend and present their work.

Conference website: https://edinburghcryosphere.org/ncarigsbb2022/

Interested? What you need to do now:

Book accommodation. Summer is extremely busy in Edinburgh and we encourage early booking of accommodation. Through the conference website there are presently some reduced rates available on university accommodation on a first come first served basis.

Submit your abstract! via the link at the top of the conference website - deadline 1 August 2022. In doing so you will indicate a preference between presenting a talk or a poster - more details on this at the foot of this message.

Format of the meetings and talks/posters The meetings will run in hybrid mode as follows:

*         IGS British Branch will run from Tuesday 30 August mid morning to Thursday 1 September noon.

*         The UK Antarctic Science Conference will run from 9am on Thursday 1 September to Friday 2 September mid-afternoon.

(Both meetings will overlap with presentations that combine the conference interests in Antarctic glaciology on the Thursday morning.)

*         We plan for oral-talk slots that are 12-15 minutes long. Talks may be presented in-person or online (live or pre-recorded).

*         For poster presenters, in-person presenters will be able to bring a standard poster for display on poster boards. We plan also to provide an option for presenting online posters, the format of which will depend on numbers of abstracts submitted, and may vary from simply a space for posters to be shared to a Gathertown space for online attendees.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to the meetings in autumn,

The Edinburgh Cryosphere group

School Visit January or June 2023

Hello all,

I hope you have managed to find somewhere cool to work today!

We have had a request for a school visit to Wolsingham School, DL13 3DJ – Bishop Auckland for an in-person visit either in January 2023 when year 8 are studying Glaciation or June 2023 when they will be studying Antarctica.

There are 185 students in the year group – so this could be a whole year group assembly type activity or possible split down into individual classes if a few people were available.

January dates – 9th Jan – 17th Feb

June dates – 5th June – 14th July

If you would like to get involved in this outreach opportunity please let me know, I can then forward your details to the school to liaise directly.

Many thanks

UKRI open letter - PGRs agains low pay

Dear all,

as you may be aware, PhD salaries for next year (set by UKRI) aren't increasing in line with inflation, which works out to a ~5-10% pay cut in real terms, depending on inflation. There is an online petition circulating which will add your signature to an open letter to UKRI with a number of suggestions. Non-PhD student supporters are also welcome to sign!

Best wishes,
