Free UKPN Workshop: Modelling in the Polar Sciences, University of Sheffield, UK

Dear UKPN members,

We would like to advertise the following free workshop organised by the UK polarnetwork (UKPN) for early-career scientists:

Modelling in the Polar Sciences

Department of Geography, University of Sheffield

2nd – 4th April 2012

Confirmed speakers:

Andrew Fowler, Edward Hanna, Richard Hindmarsh, Richard Hodgkins, Felix Ng & Ian Rutt.

This spring, the UKPN will continue our highly successful programme of workshops bringing early-career polar scientists together to meet and learn about specific areas of the discipline.

This free workshop is aimed at early career polar scientists (Masters, Ph.D. and Post-docs) who are interested in finding out about and developing skills in numerical modelling. The workshop does not presume a huge amount of prior modelling experience or advanced mathematical knowledge and is aimed at all abilities and interests. The workshop will include:

  •  Introductory sessions and discussions covering the different styles of modelling and how they are used in the polar sciences.
  • Research seminars by an amazing line-up of respected academics, including: Andrew Fowler, Limerick; Edward Hanna, Sheffield; Richard Hindmarsh, British Antarctic Survey; Richard Hodgkins, Loughborough; Felix Ng, Sheffield and Ian Rutt, Swansea on subjects ranging from modelling ice divides to ice ages!
  • Practical computer sessions based around the subjects covered in the seminars to give participants hands on experience of numerical modelling under the supervision of experienced researchers.
  • Poster sessions for participants to present their work - modelling-based or otherwise!

There will also be a workshop dinner on the second night, which will give everyone the chance to properly meet each other and enjoy an evening out in Sheffield!  This will be at a local Sheffield restaurant and there is a place in the registration form for you to confirm that you would like to come to the dinner and tell us about any special dietary requirements.

To register please fill out our registration form with your details and the title and abstract of your poster by following the link below.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7FGGJCY

The deadline for registration is Friday the 2nd of March 2012. There will be a limited number of spaces available so in the event of oversubscription, decisions will be made by Friday the 9th of March 2012.

The workshop is free, however we are unable to offer funding for travel, accommodation or the dinner. We will be offering limited, but free, accommodation on Ph.D. student's floors. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like this. Otherwise we will be sending out a list of recommended local accommodation to participants.

It will be great to welcome a broad range of Polar Scientists to Sheffield in April!

Please contact us if you have any questions about the workshop.

Thanks,

PhD position in climate dynamics at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to conduct research as part of a PhD study aimed at understanding the dynamics of warm climates, in particular the processes controlling Arctic sea ice cover, conditions in the polar and subpolar oceans, and the long-term sensitivity of the climate system. The study will include the use of process models, output from global climate models and information from paleoclimate records. The successful candidate will be part of the DYNAWARM (Dynamics of Past Warm Climates) project within the Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre, and will be encouraged to interact with physical oceanographers, atmospheric scientists and paleoceanographers during the course of their studies.

Applicants must have achieved a master's degree or equivalent in oceanography, meteorology, atmospheric sciences, physics, applied mathematics or related fields, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline (1 March 2012).

The PhD fellowship period is 4 years with 25% of the candidate's time designated for teaching.  Starting salary on grade 48 (code 1017/pay framework 20.3) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale; currently NOK 391,300 gross p.a. following ordinary meriting regulations.

Please submit an electronic application including CV, certificates and diplomas/transcripts (Bachelor's and Master's degrees), using the button marked "Apply for this job" on the jobbnorge website ( http://www.jobbnorge.no/job.aspx?jobid=80252 ). In addition to these application materials, applicants should submit a brief (1 page) statement of their research experience and intended research goals within the scope of this PhD study, as well as the names and contact details of two referees.

School Outreach Opportunity, East Sussex

Hello all and Happy New Year!

As you may or may not know, outreach is a big part of the UKPN, and from time to time we receive requests from schools to have someone from us to visit them. Late last year, there was a very successful outreach day run in Manchester by a member of the UKPN. Over Christmas, I have received another request for a school visit.

Cathy, a teacher of 30 children aged 7-9 would like a visit from a Polar Scientist between January and March of this year to fit in with their "Frozen Planet" topic. The school is in Crowborough, East Sussex.

If anyone from the UKPN would like to get involved with this, then please do email me. It is a great opportunity, and would be fantastic experience. As always, we can help with ideas for visits and suggest activities that you can run with the children.

Please do email or drop me a phone call if you have any questions, contact details are below.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Many Thanks,
