Dear APECS Members interested in Life in Extreme Environments....
We are proud to be partnering with CAREX, an EU funded Coordination
Action for Research on Life in Extreme Environments on their upcoming
meeting 18-20 October 2011.

The extreme systems studied include various polar environments, deep
oceans, the deep subsurface,  marine hydrothermal vents, hot springs,
alkaline lakes, acid environments and hot deserts.  Astrobiology and
the possibilities of life on other planets are also included within
the CAREX remit.  For the past three years the CAREX project has been
bringing together European researchers studying life in extreme
environments to create a coherent community with opportunities for
cross-disciplinary research cooperation.  It has also made links to
various research organisations outside the EU, including NSF and NASA
in the States and JAMSTEC in Japan.  A major outcome of CAREX has been
a strategic Roadmap outlining the priorities for extremophile research
that needs to be undertaken by Europe.

The themes of this Roadmap provide the focus for an international
CAREX conference to be held in Dublin in October 2011 and there will
be opportunities for APECS researchers to participate in this meeting
which will offer a unique opportunity to meet a remarkably diverse
group of researchers to discuss life in all manner of extreme
environment both on and off Earth.  A polar splinter session will be
included in the conference where it is hoped to focus on polar
microbial ecology and genomics.  IASC is offering funding to support
the involvement of a number of APECS researchers in the meeting and it
is hoped that there will also be APECS contributions to the polar
splinter session so please apply.

If you are an early career polar researcher (within 5 years of
completing your PhD, or close to that) interested in travel support
for the CAREX meeting in Dublin 18-20 October 2011, please spend a few
minutes filling out this application. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE 13 MAY
2011.

Visit http://apecs.is/events/carex-2011 to apply.

For more information on the meeting: http://www.carex-eu.org/.  The
application process is coordinated by APECS, so for questions dealing
with funding, please contact info@apecs.is.

Hope to see you in Dublin!

The next UKPN Network Day

UKPN Network Day

June 7th 2011, 11 – 18hr,

Plymouth, Royal Corinthian Yacht Club

UKN is going to hold another of its fun and successful Networking Days in Plymouth on June 7th at the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club.

This Networking Day is taking place in connection with the big Scott Centenary weekend commemorating the centenary of the British Antarctic (Terra Nova) Expedition, 1910-13, led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott.

So join us for an exciting day with a slight “historical” touch for presentations and discussions around the scientific legacy of the expedition, the wealth of archives available for polar scientists in the UK, discover the work of UK Antarctic Heritage Trust, and last but not least, meet lots of other interesting early career scientists working in all areas of polar sciences.

We are very fortunate to have Douglas Russell from the Natural History Museum as key note speaker, and Ellen Bazeley-White the Archives Manager from the British Antarctic Survey, and Anna Malaos from the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust to tell us about their work and the resources it opens up for scientists.

Bring along a poster about your current research for the poster session, and be prepared for some fun when we are playing Polar Bingo!

For those arriving early, or who have already travelled to Plymouth for the Polar Science Conference  on June 6th we hope to arrange a trip to the National Marine Aquarium in the morning.

The event is free for UKPN members!

For more information and to register your interest in attending (not necessary, but it’d help us planning!),

please contact amelie.kirchgaessner_at_bas.ac.uk

Hope to see many of you there!

Anne, Laura, Claudia and Amélie

Registration Open - Remote Sensing Summer School

Registration is now open for the following Summer School:

Remote Sensing for Polar Scientists, University of Reading, 20th – 22nd July 2011

The UKPN, in partnership with the National Center for Earth Observation, the Earth Observation technology cluster, and ESA, are proud to present a 3 day summer school aimed at early doctoral students working in Polar or cryospheric remote sensing.

Modern remote sensing techniques have improved our understanding of the cryosphere, allowing for observation of large areas (e.g. the Arctic Ocean, Greenland, or the Antarctic Ice Sheet) and facilitating studies of glaciers in remote and/or rugged zones (e.g. Patagonia & the Himalaya). A staggering variety of Earth observation methods have been used to study the cryosphere, and research frontiers continue to press forward.

We aim to introduce a variety of new techniques to those at the beginning of their academic career. Sessions will include a mixture of lectures and practicals. Practical sessions will either be self led, with the day's speakers on hand to provide guidance, or led by demonstration. Planned sessions include: Satellite Remote Sensing of the Poles, including the Cryosat mission; Lidar Remote Sensing, Integrated modeling and Earth Observation & open source Remote Sensing & GIS tools.

Accommodation & food for participants is provided, but you are expected to cover your own travel costs to & from Reading, furthermore, each participant will be expected to present a post about their current research or recent work.

Places are limited to 25 people, so register early to avoid disappointment. Registration closes at the end of May, after which successful applicants will receive an email confirming registration.

Hello from the New Committee!

Hello UK Polar Network!

And a very warm welcome to a new episode in the life of one of the
world?s biggest and best national committees for early career polar
scientists! On behalf of the new committee and the whole UK Polar
Network, I would like to thank all members of the outgoing committee
for their great work over the last year and as Jen quite rightly said,
taking the UKPN from strength to strength.

I?d also like to welcome in the new committee and say how much I?m
looking forward to working with you all. The coming year promises to
be another fantastic one and I hope you?re all as excited as I am!

2011/12 will see the UKPN extending the wonderful Education and
Outreach work that it already does. We will be organising outreach and
public engagement events alongside big polar science conferences, to
inspire the next generation of polar scientists, explorers and
enthusiasts, as well as putting on a show at the British Association
Science Festival. This year, we will also be encouraging UKPN members
to organise their own Education and Outreach events, in schools and
science centres in their local area. First and foremost, these events
are great fun, but they?re also an opportunity to get involved with
the local community and highly beneficial to us as early career
scientists for our professional development and the all-important CV.
To get involved in any Education and Outreach initiatives, email us at
education@polarnetwork.org ? we look forward to hearing from you!

There are also a whole host of workshops, mentoring panels and
networking events coming up and more in the pipeline: These events are
free and fabulous, so look out for details on the website
(www.polarnetwork.org) and in your inbox and don?t miss out! If you
would like the reward, satisfaction and employability-boost of
organising an event like this, don?t hesitate to get in touch and
we?ll help you all the way.

Suffice to say it?s going to be another marvellous year for the UK
Polar Network, I hope you?ll join us and invite (forward this email
to) your friends and colleagues to this vibrant, varied and
forward-looking community!

For more information, check out the UKPN website www.polarnetwork.org
or email us at com@polarnetwork.org.

I look forward to seeing you all soon?

Registration deadline approaching - APECS Career Development Workshop at the IUGG conference - 27th June 2011

For the attention of all early career scientists attending the IUGG conference in Melbourne in June

The registration deadline is fast approaching for the APECS Career Development Workshop on Monday 27th June 2011.

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together early career polar researchers, those interested in starting a polar research project, and senior mentors with the experience to offer advice and inspiration. The workshop will consist of plenary lectures, hands-on breakout sessions, and panel discussions.

Whilst the workshop will have a polar theme, it is open to all early career researchers. Participants will learn from experienced mentors, developing the transferrable skills vital for a successful career in polar science which are not necessarily taught in all Universities or Research Institutions. An exciting schedule of plenary lectures, hands-on breakout sessions and panel discussions will make this a highly informative and enjoyable day for all early career researchers!

Specific subjects to be addressed are:
* science communication and working with the media
* managing polar research projects and international collaborations
* writing proposals and finding funding
* using video and animations to present your research
* non-academic careers in polar science.

In addition to sharing expertise in the skills required to succeed in polar science, this workshop will also provide an opportunity for international networking and a platform for potential future collaborations, both fundamentally important for the future of polar science.
