Edinburgh Festival Volunteering Opportunity

Dear All,

UKPN will be collaborating to run the Dynamic Earth area at the Edinburgh Festival this April 18th and 19th. Along with providing some hands on activities, we will also be providing some man power so that members of the public (ages 4+) can get answers to their pressing questions about the poles and our climate.

We are looking for about 3 members to join us so if you would be interested in volunteering your time and expertise for a weekend at the Festival then please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/ctbVRomPizJ5T3k37

If you have any fun and unique hands on activities, regardless of your availability to volunteer in person, and would be willing to share the equipment required then please also get in touch. The form has space for this, or just reply to this email.

Thank you,

Chloe and Chloe, your Festival Coordinators

Outreach at the National Maritime Museum

Hi all,

The National Maritime Museum are theming their Easter holiday activities this year around Antarctica. They will be doing a bit of art, history and science across the holiday (4th April – 19th April 2020), and want the families visiting the museum to meet and talk to scientists who are actively researching and/or visiting the Antarctic. It will be an easy and fun bit of science outreach for any Antarctic researchers!

If there is a date or two you would like to be involved, please contact me. Weekdays are preferred over weekends, and exclusive of 10th-13th April.

Thanks,

Holly

Outreach webinar

Dear UK Polar Network members,

In November you may have registered your interest in online training for science outreach in schools. Here is the eagerly awaited webinar!

It is now well-recognised that science outreach is an essential soft skill for any researcher. Do you understand the necessity but feel too underprepared to get involved? We're offering online training for anybody interested in taking their science into the classroom and adding a polar theme. The training will be led by a science communication expert and a school teacher to allow both worlds to come together. The focuses will be science communication for children and activity preparation, with tips on public speaking.

Monday 17th February 10am – 12pm

Register here: http://tiny.cc/UKPN-webinar-registration

Thanks,

UKPN team

Arctic Frontiers 2020: Next generation Arctic field courses: sharing best practices from the UK, Norway and Russia

Arctic Frontiers 2020

Next generation Arctic field courses: sharing best practices from the UK, Norway and Russia

When: 29 January 2020, 16:15-17:45

Where: Mellomstort møterom (Quality Hotel Saga), Tromso

Organisers: UK Science and Innovation Network and NERC Arctic Office

Arctic research is making a significant contribution to international efforts directed at better understanding the global challenges we are facing in the 21st century. Known for its remoteness and harsh climate, the Arctic is far from being an easy place to conduct fieldwork in, and it comes with many risks. As the need to understand the rapidly changing Arctic becomes more pressing, we ask ourselves what capabilities and tools future Arctic researchers may require and how best to cater to their needs.

The UK, Norway and Russia have accumulated substantial experience in designing and delivering Arctic field courses for young scientists. Over the past few years we have seen innovative new approaches to Arctic field courses whereby they were developed by early career researchers for early career researchers and involved international cooperation, taking into account specificities of a given Arctic region and efficiently addressing knowledge and skills gaps.

This session, following the PechaKucha method, will feature a line-up of the next generation of Arctic researchers and organisations involved in organising field courses in the Arctic. Speakers will share best practices in planning and running Arctic field courses, followed by discussion on what future Arctic field courses might need to look like to empower new generations of Arctic researchers and how international cooperation in this area could aid knowledge transfer.

- Henry Burgess, Head of the NERC Arctic Office
- Saule Akhmetkaliyeva, PhD student, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK Polar Network
- Ingrid Medby, Senior Lecturer in Political Geography, Oxford Brookes University
- Marina Kalinina, UArctic Vice-President for Interregional Cooperation/Rector's Adviser for International Cooperation at Northern (Arctic) Federal University
- Yulia Zaika, APECS Russia Past-President 2017-2019
- Josefine Lenz, Project Officer, APECS
- Kate Hendry, biogeochemist and chemical oceanographer, the University of Bristol
- Margareta Johansson, research coordinator, Lund University/Coordinator for EU programme, INTERACT
- Phil Steinberg, Professor of Political Geography, Durham University
- Andrea Schneider, Project Officer, University of Tromsø/APECS Norway

Book title: The North American Arctic: Themes in Regional Security
Editors: Dwayne Ryan Menezes and Heather N. Nicol
Download free: http://bit.ly/2ReOTnA

**********************************
The North American Arctic addresses the emergence of a new security relationship within the North American North. It focuses on current and emerging security issues that confront the North American Arctic and that shape relationships between and with neighbouring states (Alaska in the US; Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut in Canada; Greenland and Russia).

Identifying the degree to which 'domain awareness' has redefined the traditional military focus, while a new human rights discourse undercuts traditional ways of managing sovereignty and territory, the volume's contributors question normative security arrangements. Although security itself is not an obsolete concept, our understanding of what constitutes real human-centred security has become outdated. The contributors argue that there are new regionally specific threats originating from a wide range of events and possibilities, and very different subjectivities that can be brought to understand the shape of Arctic security and security relationships in the twenty-first century.

The North American Arctic provides a framework or lens through which many new developments are assessed in order to understand their impact on a changing circumpolar region at different scales – from the level of community to the broader national and regional scale.
