Dear colleagues,

We are delighted to invite you to the World Congress of Marine Stations (WCMS), on November 17th-19th 2021 (online).

The Congress will bring together those responsible for Marine Stations and Marine Station networks from around the world  with a focus on progress towards a World Association of Marine Stations (WAMS), which has received official support from both UNESCO-IOC and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science. WAMS's role will be to establish inclusive partnerships and strengthen collaboration among marine scientists to foster marine scientific research internationally. Ultimately, WAMS will help the marine scientific community to better support global goals for the ocean and provide a stronger voice to champion the role of marine stations.

The Congress will include a range of talks showcasing marine stations from across the globe, as well as panel discussions, bilateral meetings, and keynote presentation from the IOC-UNESCO. To learn more about the programme, please visit the website.

To register for the Congress, please fill in the registration form, please note there is no fee to participate in the Congress: wcms2021.com/wcms-registration

We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Congress!

LGBTQ+ STEM Day & Polar Pride Day Event - 18th November 11:00-14:00

Good afternoon,

The 18th of November marks both LGBTQ+ STEM DAY and Polar Pride Day. Both days were launched as a celebration and to raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ individuals working in both STEM and the Polar Regions. This year, UKRI Pride Network will be working with NERC, BAS and colleagues to create an engaging and inclusive celebration to mark the day.

During the event you will hear from several guest speakers (including BAS staff and students) about both their work in the research sector and personal journeys as an LGBTQ+ individual or ally. The three-hour event will involve 3 sessions:

  1. Voices of LGBTQ+STEM Day
  2. 'Developing in STEM: The importance of Allyship and reflections in climbing the ladder' – Panel Discussion
  3. Voices of Polar Pride.

You will need to register in advance on Eventbright here where you will find a full programme for the day.

Polar Pride Day launched in 2020 with the support of the Government of the British Antarctic Territory and the Government of South Georgia & the South Sandwich Islands with participation from 49 countries! Share your images, stories or celebrations on social media (or ask your comms team or UKPN) using the hashtags #PolarPride, #PolarPrideDay or #PolarPride2021. It would be fantastic to see celebrations wherever you are, but especially if you are in the polar regions or on a ship for November 18th.

December multilingual cryospheric get together

Dear UKPN members,

The EGU Cryosphere division, in collaboration with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) from around the world, the international glaciological society Early career Glaciology Group (EGG), the UK Polar Network and the Svalbard Integrated Arctic Earth Observing System (SIOS) are organising a multilingual networking event.

If you are a native speaker of a non-English language and you would like to have your language represented at this event, please let me know so we can try to translate the invitation for the event in your language. There will be the opportunity to subscribe to the event giving your language preferences at a later date - but the more we communicate in different languages, the better the chances of having a large group showing up! 🙂

Dear all,

Currently,  SEARCH seeks nominations of scientific, Indigenous, and decision-making experts to serve on co-production teams. Each team will include a balanced mix of scientific, Indigenous, and decision-making experts.

Information here: https://searcharcticscience.org/coproduction-teams/

Nominations may either be self made or via an organisation.

We would like to give you both options. If you are interested in this opportunity please do one of the following:

  1. Self-nominate using the form linked on the webpage above (deadline 15th November)

  2. If you have worked with UKPN previously and would like to be considered for a UKPN nomination to the call please do the following:

    1. By 11:59pm GMT on 5th November, Provide responses to this form: https://forms.gle/UE15STdn6nup86jW7

  3. If you have already self nominated, but would like to be considered by UKPN, please send us a copy of your responses to the SEARCH nomination form + no more than 200 words describing your previous involvement with UKPN and why you support UKPN. This should be done by 11:59pm GMT on 5th November.

Please note the deadlines above and we look forward to reviewing your applications!
