Subject: Applications open for upcoming Science Policy Workshop in Reykjavik on 8 - 9 October 2019

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), the German Arctic Office of the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), and the Icelandic Center for Research (RANNIS), in cooperation with the German Embassy in Reykjavik and supported by the German Federal Foreign Office are organizing a workshop "Raising awareness and building capacity for science-based policy-making" on 8 - 9 October 2019 in Reykjavik, Iceland just before the start of the Arctic Circle Assembly 2019.

The dialogue between scientists and policy-makers is crucial to ensure that climate and environmental policies are based on sound scientific knowledge. Therefore, the knowledge transfer from science to policy plays a major role in modern science and will be even more important in the future. Exposing researchers to the science-policy-interface is particularly important in an early career stage to develop an understanding of the tools and processes involved and a natural collaboration beyond science. Policy needs scientists who have consolidated knowledge and give objective and independent advice.

Communicating scientific information to policy-makers requires certain skills in translating the scientific information into information that can be understood by policy makers or non-scientists, as scientists and policy-makers very often speak different "languages". This workshop aims to provide training to early career researchers to raise awareness of the need to communicate beyond the research community, to introduce new career paths for early career researchers outside academia and to lower "mental barriers" in the transition between politics and science.

The agenda will include invited introductory keynote presentations by both policy-makers and scientists experienced in knowledge transfer. Two breakout groups led by invited mentors will discuss specific elements of the science-policy-interface in more detail.

The two-day workshop will be open for up to 30 participants. Invited to apply are Arctic research-focused PhD students and PostDocs from both natural and social sciences and early career Arctic indigenous researchers or knowledge holders.

Limited travel funding generously provided by the German Federal Foreign Office is available for participants who are either affiliated with German institutions or are German citizens working abroad or are Arctic indigenous researchers and knowledge holders.

More information about the workshop and the application form are available on the APECS website

Application deadline is on 31 May 2019 at 13:00 GMT

For questions please contact info@arctic-office.de or info@apecs.is.

Polar Nutrition Outreach Opportunity - National Maritime Museum - 17th August

Dear UKPN mailing list,

We were contacted recently by the National Maritime Museum and asked whether we would like to run a family-friendly workshop on Polar Nutrition during their well-being and nutrition on the 17th August.

‘We are developing a new family festival this year focused on well-being and nutrition, to partly respond to food poverty in the borough of Greenwich as well as to provide fun and free activities for local families. We are hoping to programme some activities that respond both to the theme but also to the museum’s collection, including our Polar Worlds gallery. Charlotte and I were wondering whether the UK Polar Network ever looks at diet in the Polar regions and whether you might be interested in participating in the festival from this perspective? We are looking for something the whole family could join in with and that could be run at a selection of times throughout the day. The festival is being held on Saturday 17th August. Let me know if you would like to discuss further.’

As the UKPN committee is mostly consists of Earth/Ocean and social scientists we do not feel suitably qualified to run an event on this topic and so we are reaching to our members to see if anyone has relevant knowledge and would be interested in running a workshop at this festival at the museum. We found this interesting resource online: https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/445111/polar-explorer-cookbook and thought this could be a good starting point for planning some activities but we are also open to other ideas. Your travel expenses will be covered (ideally < than £50 pp if 3 volunteers attend) and we will cover costs of any purchased materials for the activities. If you are interested please contact education@polarnetwork.org by the 7th of May and we can explore the possibility of running the workshop.

Many thanks,

Chelsey

Outreach volunteers for royal society event

Hi everyone,

Had this email through and thought I'd pass it on in case anyone is interested on doing some outreach with the royal society this summer:

Hi all,

The Royal Society is looking for reliable and highly motivated volunteers to work at the 2019 Summer Science Exhibition, taking place on 1 - 7 July 2019 in London.

The Summer Science Exhibition gives members of the public a unique opportunity to chat to scientists conducting the most exciting cutting-edge science and technology research across the UK, as well as offering a packed programme of interactive shows, talks and activities for all ages throughout the week.

With so much going on, we rely on our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers to ensure the success of this event. We are looking for people who are happy to engage in a wide variety of tasks, have good team working skills, are comfortable talking to the public, have an interest in science and, above all, are enthusiastic.

If you're interested, please see full details here: https://careers-royalsociety.icims.com/jobs/1297/volunteers---the-royal-society-summer-science-exhibition-2019/job

All applications should be submitted by Friday 3 May. Please direct any enquiries to exhibition@royalsociety.org.

Thanks,

David

Subscription probe for UKPN - please ignore

UKPN
UK Polar Network Mailing List

Subscription probe for UKPN - please ignore Sat, 13 Apr 2019 06:00:10

This message is a "probe" for your subscription to the UKPN list. You do not need to take any action to remain subscribed to the list. In particular, you should not reply to this message. Simply discard it now, or read on if you would like to know more about how this probing mechanism works.

A "probe" is a message like the one you are reading, sent to an individual subscriber and tagged with a special signature to uniquely identify this particular subscriber (you may not see the signature because it is in the mail headers). If the subscriber's email address is no longer valid, then the message will be returned to LISTSERV and the faulty address will be removed from the list. If the subscriber's address is still valid, then the message will not bounce and the user will not be deleted.

Probe failure for UKPN

UKPN
UK Polar Network Mailing List

Probe failure for UKPN Fri, 12 Apr 2019 08:49:30

LISTSERV@JISCMAIL.AC.UK has just received the enclosed delivery error as a result of a probe sent to your APECSINFO.UKPN@BLOGGER.COM account for the UKPN list. If you are reading this message, it means that your mail system is successfully delivering mail to your mailbox, while at the same time reporting that an error has occurred (or, alternatively, the error could be due to a system problem that has since then been fixed). At any rate, LISTSERV has no way to know that you have actually received the present message, and is operating on the assumption that your email address is no longer valid. Typically, LISTSERV will send you one or more additional probe messages, on a daily basis, to determine whether the failure persists. If a failure does persist, then you will eventually be removed from the list. Some lists are configured to remove users on the first failure.

Assuming you have not yet been removed from the list, then you can stop this process by sending the following command to LISTSERV@JISCMAIL.AC.UK as soon as possible:

CONFIRM UKPN

This will tell LISTSERV that your account actually does work and that you still want to receive mail from the UKPN list.

While the CONFIRM command will solve your immediate problem, it could be a matter of time until you find yourself in the same situation again. Please take a look at the enclosed error report and try to determine whether it is a genuine error or just an informational message. Keep in mind that this error report was processed by a computer that cannot tell "User JAIME24 does not exist" from "Please note that the Department of Microbiology will be closed from December 19 to January 2". These informational messages, while possibly useful to a reader, should not be sent in reply to a message coming from a mailing list (it is very easy for the mail program to determine whether a message is coming from a mailing list). Genuine errors should be reported to your computer/network support staff as soon as possible so they can be corrected.
