Contributors needed for Virtual Early Career Ocean Professionals Day (June 1st to 2nd)

Hi all,

This may be of interest to those of you who are marine focussed! It's not an event I am running, but if you have any questions I can put you in touch with the organisers. I've also attached their marketing cards in case you'd like to pass on to your networks and colleagues.

Save the Date!

Fisheries observer programme for krill vessels fishing - May to September 2021

Dear members,

Please see the below opportunity to be an observer on board trawlers targeting Antarctic krill in the Southern Ocean. It is fairly time sensitive so if you are available for these deployments and meet all the eligibility criteria, get in touch with Steven (cc’ed) asap.

Thanks,

UKPN team

Dear Sir/Madam

I represent MRAG, a marine resource management company who, amongst other things, run the fisheries observer programme for krill vessels fishing around South Georgia. We have a couple of spaces still available for the upcoming season.

The two deployments departing are on Chinese vessels. I estimate they will fly out to the Falkland Islands on 17th May. Anticipated end date is in September, although exact dates will be dependent on vessel activities. MRAG are running a two-day remote training course this week, on Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th May.

The course covers generic aspects of being a CCAMLR fisheries observer (H&S, intro to CMs etc) plus specific training on krill deployments – the protocols, data-handling, species ID etc. We will also provide online access to material covering a broad introduction to CCAMLR and observer schemes.

Eligibility requirements are as follows:

  • UK passport valid until at least October 2021
  • Sea survival certificate recognise by STCW (e.g. RYA sea survival) valid until at least October 2021
  • ENG-1 seafarer’s medical valid until at least October 2021
  • Degree in biology, oceanography or similar
  • At-sea experience. There is no specifically mandated number of days required but we normally look for about 30+. There can be some flexibility in this.

The sea survival and ENG-1 may be obtained before deployment (although there is limited time remaining). A Seaman’s Book is advisable for deployments going via the Falkland Islands. MRAG will need to work with observers to get the seaman’s books.

The advert on the MRAG website is here:  https://mrag.co.uk/ccamlr-fisheries-observers-antarctic-krill-2021-season

Please do let me know if you are able to help.

Regards

Dr Steven Young

PDRA in Snow Algae Physiology

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to carry out research on the metabolome, genome and physiology of Antarctic snow algae isolates and communities, and the nutrient chemistry of their habitats. The post is a crucial part of a new NERC-funded project to understand the physiology and distribution of snow algae blooms across the whole of Antarctica. You will work in close collaboration with partners at the British Antarctic Survey, University of Edinburgh and University of Cambridge. https://www.sams.ac.uk/science/projects/saga/

You will be an articulate experimental worker with practical experience in either microalgae physiology (e.g. culturing, bioreactors, growth, gas exchange), biochemistry (e.g. GCMS, HPLC) and/or genomics (eg. rbcL, ITS, 18S barcoding). You will produce high quality results to advance the project, present at conferences and publish results in high impact journals. The post is laboratory and desk based but opportunities to carry out Antarctic fieldwork can be explored.
