Deadline Reminder: Arctic Research Sailing Expedition

Hi all,

The UK Polar Network is collaborating with the Novara One Planet programme to support early career researchers in participating in an Arctic sailing expedition to conduct research projects.

If you have a project idea, please submit an expression of interest by 5pm GMT on the 1st of Feb! Application form here: https://forms.gle/5FhehSUweYFsw5Gz7

Projects should be related to trans- or multidisciplinary research which links to community preparedness and adaptation to climate change. Themes include: coastal hazard risk reduction; vulnerability; climate change impacts; climate change adaptation; community and ecosystem resilience; ocean literacy; ocean and coastal governance. More details can be found in the EOI form above.

This is not a funded opportunity, but the UKPN will provide funding application support to selected ECR applicants. This would include, for example, guidance on grant applications, and reviewing proposal documents. You can of course self fund if you have the resources already.

If you have any questions, please email president@polarnetwork.org

Many thanks,
Chloe

UK Antarctic Heritage Trust webinar Hand-built heritage: conserving Antarctica's wooden architecture

Dear all,

Just wanted to share our latest webinar that will be live tomorrow evening from 6-7pm GMT.

This month, we explore the hidden history of Antarctica’s post-war architecture. Discover how these amazing structures were designed using pre-fabricated panels and make-do-and-mend salvaged materials and built against the odds, and meet the people whose job it is to restore and protect them today.

Our expert speakers will highlight the challenges of conserving wooden buildings in remote locations and extreme Antarctic conditions and discuss the threat that climate change has on these structures as we look to protect their future.

To book your free place visit https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/antarctica-in-sight-live-hand-built-heritage-tickets-488579824407.

Please spread the word and I hope to join some of you tomorrow night.

Kind regards

Heather

We are pleased to invite you to this milestone event for the Southern Ocean community and beyond.

The theme of the inaugural SOOS Symposium, "Southern Ocean in a Changing World", recognizes the important role of the Southern Ocean in the Earth system. The symposium is a forum for assessing our progress in providing observing systems, observations and regional programs that deliver timely and accessible information. This is also an opportunity to discuss the challenges faced in providing long-term observations that address policy and societal issues as well as advancing our scientific understanding.

In addition to enjoying a stimulating science program, the SOOS Symposium is an opportunity to build networks with colleagues and friends, and enjoy the unique charm of Hobart, Tasmania.

As Australia's hub for the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and Southern Ocean science, education, research and logistics, Hobart acts as the gateway for not just expeditions transiting through each year but for the 950+ people working on the Southern Ocean across various organisations and industries based in Tasmania.

Webinar: Antarctic Science Bursary: tips for potential applicants - 2023

Dear UKPN members

In coordination with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), Antarctic Science Ltd. is running a webinar to help potential applicants for the 2023 Antarctic Science International Bursary. This bursary runs every year and is for up to £6000 to support PhD or early career researchers to extend the scope of an existing research project. The 2023 bursary application is now open. More details regarding the bursary are here: http://www.antarcticsciencebursary.org.uk/.

The webinar will explain more about the bursary and advice on how to submit a successful application. Previous recipients of this bursary will share their experiences on the usefulness of this bursary in their research careers in Antarctic science. This will be followed by a Q+A session, where you can ask any bursary-related question to our panel of past award recipients and members of the Antarctic Science bursary board.

The webinar will be at 3:00 pm (GMT) and again at 8:00 pm (GMT) on Friday, January 13.

Registration information is available here: https://apecs.is/news/apecs-news/5114-antarctic-science-bursary-2023.html.

I look forward to welcoming you on 13th January 2023.

Cheers,

Shridhar
