School visit opportunity-Bedford and North east london - help needed

Hi everyone,

We're in desperate need of some willing volunteers to share some of their polar scientist stories and experiences with a couple of schools, one in Bedford and one in Newbury Park, East London. They've been patiently waiting for us to get back to them with a volunteer, as ideally they'd like someone feb/april. If anyone is keen to help out with these and get the chance to engage some school kids in polar science, then please get back to the education team at: education@polarnetwork.org.

Transport costs are covered, and usually it's only about an hour needed at the school. They're a lot of fun J

Beford one:

Bedford Girl's School

Ideally they'd like an assembly talk, and then a little workshop done with 3 smaller groups. But I think even an assembly talk would be great if people would rather do that than a workshop.

London (Newbury Park, East London):

Oaks Park High School

Our Y7 cohort is 300 so was thinking maybe an assembly style however we can easily pick smaller groups if necessary however would love to have all of them involved if possible. Topics wise again whatever is easiest - our unit covers glaciers as well as general physical geography stuff.

Thanks everyone, we really do appreciate your support in helping us reach kids all over the UK and give them unique chances to meet and listen to polar scientists.

Best wishes

Anna

Subject: School visit-Bedford Girls' School

Hello,

I am hoping we can arrange for someone to visit and enthuse our girls about Antarctica this term. Last year we were lucky enough to welcome Maddie Brasier to our school and she talked about what she studies, how she became a scientist/explorer and gave the girls some activities to do. Maddie is in Antarctica this term so cannot visit again. If you have someone who would be available to do something relatively similar we would be really grateful.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Helena Schofield

UKPN at festivals

Hi all,

I’m looking for volunteers to help out with the activities we are running at festivals this year. They’re great opportunities to interact with the public, while hopefully being a lot of fun too!

1.       Saturday 16th March 2019 – Southampton Science and Engineering Festival (SOTSEF)

a.       Running three activities titled ‘polar puzzles’, aimed at all ages, and bringing in research that is being done at Southampton University about the Arctic.

b.       Activities already mostly decided, just need help on the day.

c.       Southampton undergrads and postgrads preferred to help, but others always helpful

d.       All day event

2.       Thursday 25th to Sunday 28th July 2019 - WOMAD

a.       Fitting into the physics side of this ‘world’ based festival

b.       Still in the planning stages, but looking at 2 activities and a couple of talks. Activities will be physics and polar based.

c.       Any extra volunteers we can amass will be much appreciated by the organisers, and if they like you, recycled into the other super exciting activities they are running

d.       They want us to have volunteers with a physics background (some oceanography, maths etc. is fine)

e.       Only working 12-6pm every day, so the rest of the time you can enjoy the festival!

f.        Camping, tents provided if necessary

If interested, please fill out the following: https://goo.gl/forms/BnnTRjjZNtXjD3fR2.

I will be storing the responses for now, and forwarding the ones interested in WOMAD to their organisers. After this, they will be deleted.

Thanks,

Holly

Open science event on detecting high latitude ecosystem change 15th February 2019

Dear UKPN,

We are hosting a one-day meeting on detecting change in high latitude ecosystems on Friday 15th February in the Geography Department at Cambridge University. This event will showcase recent advances in monitoring vegetation change and highlight new technologies and data analysis tools to detect environmental change. We’re specifically looking for research into integrating field and plot sampling data, UAV data and remote sensing. We welcome participants from the research community in all aspects of high-latitude ecosystems including climate responses, environmental changes including anthropogenic factors, modelling, remote sensing, use of UAVs and big data.

This is a great opportunity to present your work, either as a talk or poster, especially for early career researchers, and to network with other researchers. This is an open science event, supported by the Global Britain Fund of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, connected to a UK-Russian research project detecting forest change in northern Russia. This event is free to attend, and the deadline for registration is Thursday 7th February. Logistical details will follow.

We look forward to seeing you in February.

Good afternoon all,

Apologies for any cross posting.

We have an introductory training course in metabolomics for the environmental scientist coming up which you may be interested in; please do share with any networks that you think may be interested.

Please note: this is the final scheduling of this NERC ATSC funded course. We do not currently have plans to run this again, therefore if you are interested please register soon to avoid disappointment. It is unlikely that this opportunity will come around again!

All the best,
David

Introduction to Metabolomics for the Environmental Scientist
28 February - 1 March 2019

This 2-day NERC-funded Advanced Training Short Course will provide environmental scientists with an overview of the metabolomics pipeline. The course is intended for environmental scientist with little or no previous experience of metabolomics and who are interested to discover how this relatively new and powerful approach could be integrated into their research. Experts working in the NERC Metabolomics facility-NBAF-Birmingham will teach the course.

Topics covered:
  • Introduction to environmental metabolomics with case studies
  • Experimental design and quality control
  • Sample collection and preparation
  • Overview of analytical laboratory techniques (mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy)
  • Overview of data processing and statistics for metabolomics
  • Introduction to metabolite identification

    outreach opportunity - Near Coventry

    Morning Everyone!

I'm emailing about an exciting opportunity to visit a school in Rugby near Coventry. They're just looking for someone to give a little talk about some of their experiences as a polar scientist to inspire the students at Avon Valley School (see their email below).

Please get in touch if you're happy to help out and share your fun stories and fieldwork photos with the class. I know most of you have had the fortune of having amazing experiences, it'd be great to inspire some future scientists by giving them the chance to talk to you :)

    Best wishes

    Hi
II was interested to see that you did school visits. I am the careers lead in a school with a significant proportion of disadvantaged students and would be very interested in having a talk from you to inspire students about what can be achieved. How would I go about organising this and is there a cost involved.

I look forward to hearing from you

Fully funded Antarctic climate modelling PhD at Northumbria, UK

    Hi UKPNers,

I'd like to advertise a fully funded PhD opportunity. The funding applies to students from outside the UK too, so feel free to spread the word.

The broad topic is how the size and shape of Antarctica affected the climate of Antarctica in the past.

There's an increasing number of constraints on the past temperature of Antarctica which are inconsistent with results from climate models. This is most likely due to the shape of the ice sheets that are used in the climate models, not some fundamental error in the models. Trouble is, it's not clear what the shape of Antarctica was in the past. In this PhD project you'll have a chance to investigate this question.

The student will have a lot of scope to define the direction of the project. Possible avenues include understanding the climate dynamics of the response or understanding how the isotopic composition of the ice can be impacted by the changing circulation. This will be based around the use of climate models, so you'll learn how to run and analyse such models

The studentship is available to Students Worldwide, and covers full fees and a full stipend, paid for three years at RCUK rates (for 2018/19, this is £14,777 pa).

Closing date is 25th January 2019

Mount Everest Foundation - Funding for scientific research in mountain regions

The Mount Everest Foundation is a registered charity, set up following the first ascent of Everest in 1953, and initially financed from the surplus funds and subsequent royalties resulting from that expedition. The aims of the Foundation are to encourage and support expeditions exploring mountain regions, and both education and research pertaining to a wide range of subjects in mountain areas, including geography, glaciology and the effects of altitude.

Normally, the MEF will only support expeditions where the majority of members/PI come from Great Britain or New Zealand.

The Screening Committee meets to consider applications twice a year - in November and March. The closing dates for receipt of completed forms are 30th September and 31st January, the forms are not hard going.

We welcome applications for support for scientific work, which have to some extent been underrepresented in recent awards, or applications to provide support for scientists wishing to undertake first ascents, major new routes, or exploration in little-explored or previously inaccessible areas where they already are, or want to do fieldwork.

Awards in the past have varied from <£1000 to several thousand. A recent exceptional climbing Expedition received more than £50k. The MEF is keen to provide additional supporting funds rather than the entire cost of a project, so, if you've already been writing grants and a few £k extra will really make a difference, reword your application for MEF. The MEF expect to support research that will eventually lead to publication, so support is geared towards PGR, ECR and more established groups where a small amount of money may provide add on science of value.

Awards do not include staff time, overheads etc, they are to support the direct costs of undertaking fieldwork. For further guidance on the application process, previously supported expedition reports, and the latest versions of application forms please visit: http://www.mef.org.uk/

If you look at previous awards you'll see a dominance of white male grants......as a Trustee of the MEF I'm keen to see this diversify, it is at the application stage rather than a bias at the panel review/award stage causing this from what I can see over time - we need more applications coming in. New Zealanders are also very under represented.....it won't replace a Marsden or EQC, but it might get you the pilot data you need, or enable an extra PGR to get on a trip you already have funded.

‘We are based in Newbury Park East London, on the central line. Our Y7 cohort is 300 so was thinking maybe an assembly style however we can easily pick smaller groups if necessary however would love to have all of them involved if possible. Topics wise again whatever is easiest - our unit covers glaciers as well as general physical geography stuff. ‘

    Many thanks,

    Chelsey
