Applications Open for 2013-2014 Leadership Positions - Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS)

These positions can bring great leadership experience, lots of learning in international collaboration, and it is really interesting to serve as a liaison of sorts between the UKPN and APECS International.

How do you apply for the ExCom?
It's easy! You only have to provide
  • basic biographical information (name, institution, contact details, country of residence and origin),
  • a brief biosketch that gives us a better picture of who you are (e.g. research theme and interests, your hobbies, etc.),
  • a photo of yourself that we can use for the APECS website,
  • the names and contact details of two referees, and
  • a statement of interest detailing why you are interested in serving on the APECS Executive Committee; how you would like to contribute to APECS as a member of the APECS Executive Committee. Please also include any past involvement in organizing APECS activities, or other exeriences that would make you a good candidate. An outline of what we are specifically hoping you address in your statement of interest and general information about the election procedure is available on the APECS website athttp://www.apecs.is/about-apecs/leadership/executive-commitee

What is the timeline for the election?
The 2013-2014 APECS Executive Committee elections follow a strict timeline.
  • 18 July: Announcement of APECS Executive Committee Elections sent out
  • 29 July – 8 September: Accepting nominations (if you are on fieldwork during this time you can send in your application earlier.)
  • 9 – 20 September: Review of applications, current APECS Council members have the chance for a question and answer session both via email and through an online call with the APECS Executive Committee applicants. Applicants should be available for questions and conference call during this time.
  • 21 – 26 September: APECS Executive Committee election: online voting by APECS Council Members
  • 27 – 30 September: Final tally and review of votes, transition process 
  • 1 October: official announcement of 2013-2014 APECS Executive Committee

Applications for the APECS Executive Committee will be accepted starting 29 July 2013 (if you are on fieldwork you can send in your application earlier). Please email your application as one PDF to Election Coordinator Allen Pope (allen.pope@nsidc.org). Applications will be processed soon after they are received. The final application deadline is 8 September 2013. There will be no extensions.

Please note that if you're interested in becoming more involved in APECS but the ExCom sounds like too much for now, applications for the 2013-2014 Council are open, too. How do you apply for the APECS Council?
It's easy! You only have to provide the following in one PDF:

  • Expression of Interest Letter (around 500 words) explaining the following:
  • why you are interested in APECS and sitting on the Council? This includes any ideas you have for projects or activities the organization could undertake, a desire to become more connected to the larger polar community, ways to improve APECS and the role of young researchers in polar research, general interest in the process of the organization, and many others.
  • Any major periods of extended absence, such as field work, long vacations, intense exam periods or any other long period of absence.
  • it is also quite helpful to know a little  about your experiences (including previous APECS involvement -  if any) and why you are interested in the Polar Regions.

The School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh invites applications for a 3-year funded PhD studentship in Earth Observation of the Cryosphere. The studentship is part of ESA funded projects, the overall aim of the PhD is to develop and utilise satellite measurements from the ESA CryoSat mission to produce surface topography at ice sheet margins and large glaciers. 

Primary supervision will be provided by Dr Noel Gourmelen, co-supervision will be provided by Professors Andy Shepherd of the University of Leeds. This post is for a postdoctoral researcher in glaciology or cryospheric science with a planned start date as close as possible to 1st September 2013 to run to 31st March 2015 (up to 19 months duration) http://tinyurl.com/lnaeyzp. The main criterion for appointment is scientific excellence, as demonstrated through the applicant's publication and funding record. Priority will be given to applicants who want to collaborate with existing members of Swansea Glaciology Group. We particularly welcome researchers who share our strong commitment to public outreach.

Group members have expressed particular interest in working with the postholder on one or more of these topics:

  • numerical modelling of an Antarctic glacier-ice shelf system and / or analysis of airborne geophysical and/or satellite remote sensing data to characterise physical changes in Antarctic glacier-ice shelf systems (BK and AL),
  • rheological modelling of glacier substrates (JH),
  • analysis of an extensive database of oceanographic observations from the south-east Greenland shelf and fjords in order to assess of the importance of ocean influences on glaciers in the region (TM),
  • analysis of airborne survey and terrestrial data from Helheim Glacier, south-east Greenland and / or Kangia Nunata Sermia Glacier, south-west Greenland (TM, AL and TJ),
  • quantifying calving statistics from Greenland glaciers using remote sensing (AL),
  • developing numerical models of iceberg calving and subglacial hydrology (IR).

(i)            improve understanding of glacier dynamic processes through inclusion of field and remote observations into process-based models,

(ii)          build on our world-leading development of field geophysical techniques,

(iii)         further develop models of glacier calving processes,

(iv)         consolidate the group's role within the Cryospheric science community by leading major multi-disciplinary initiatives to understand better the role of ice masses within the global climate system,

(v)          contribute to policy and public debates on climate change.

The post is funded by the Climate Change Consortium of Wales (C3W) and the post can be funded to the end date of the project (31st March 2015). Measured outputs for this project are published papers and grant proposals.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in the Earth or Environmental sciences and will have a desire to collaborate with members of Swansea Glaciology Group on research of mutual interest. You will have a strong record in publication and winning of external funds or the clear potential to develop these. Our department is located a few minutes walk from the beach, and Swansea has a fantastic environment (e.g., http://www.the-gower.com/beaches/beaches.htm) for bbqs, watersports, surfing, mountain walking / biking and climbing. The 39th International Glaciological Society British Branch meeting will be hosted by the Department of Geography in the School of Social, Political and Geographical sciences, Loughborough University.

As with previous annual meetings, the event will comprise an informal two days of presentations on all aspects of snow and ice research. All are welcome; postgraduate students and international colleagues visiting the UK are particularly encouraged to attend and present their work. A conference dinner will be held on the evening of the first day. A Polar Film Festival outreach event is being held in the evening of 3rd September, which may be of interest to delegates who intend to arrive early. A UK Polar Network mentor panel will also be held as part of the meeting.
