Risky Futures: Climate, Geopolitics and Local Realities in the Uncertain Circumpolar North

Berghahn Books are pleased to share the recent publication in hardback and ebook of Risky Futures: Climate, Geopolitics and Local Realities in the Uncertain Circumpolar North. The introduction can be read here.

The volume examines complex intersections of environmental conditions, geopolitical tensions and local innovative reactions characterising 'the Arctic' in the early twenty-first century. What happens in the region (such as permafrost thaw or methane release) not only sweeps rapidly through local ecosystems but also has profound global implications. Bringing together a unique combination of authors who are local practitioners, indigenous scholars and international researchers, the book provides nuanced views of the social consequences of climate change and environmental risks across human and non-human realms.

If you are interested in reviewing this book for a relevant journal an electronic review copy can be requested here. To recommend this book to your library, use this form.

Best wishes

Ben

Presentation Training and Conference Opportunity

Hi all,

Presentation training opportunity from Elizabthe Avery at the Presenter Network below:

Tickets for the Presenter Network Conference 2022 on Friday 2nd September are now available! *APPLAUSE* *FIREWORKS* *CHEERING GALORE*

You can book for the onsite conference here and the online conference here – both are FREE!  Please note there will be a substantial crossover between the two event strands as we will be streaming as much as possible live however there will be some differences.  Don't panic though, both programmes look absolutely rocking so you are in for a treat!

In case you haven't heard about us, the Presenter Network was set up by Liz Avery at the Royal Observatory Greenwich as a way for presenters to share best practice as well as watch others in action to develop their presenting style. Since then, we have run regular meet-ups in collaboration with other organisations and established hubs covering every aspect of presenting you could ever imagine; using comedy effectively, working with challenging audience members, how to look after your voice and everything in between.  Our members may come from many different sectors but they all have one thing in common; they need to present in some way as part of their job.  That may mean standing in front of a crowd every day or just once every so often – it is all presenting and uses the same skills.  The network is going from strength to strength but we always have room for more members so jump on in and join us!  You can read all about us, the hubs, conference and even join via our website.

We are updating the conference programme daily at the moment as details are confirmed, you can keep track here

Exciting stuff right?! We hope to see as many of you there whether that is digitally or in person!

Happy presenting!

Best wishes,

Liz

Call for two UKPN Outreach Officers 2022-2023

Dear UKPNers and not only,

It's that time of year again! We're looking for two Outreach Officers (Events and Festivals) on our 2022/23 committee. We welcome a diverse range of people and all you need is enthusiasm! PhD students, post-docs, masters students and non-academics are all happily accepted.

The Outreach Officer (Events and Festivals) is responsible for planning and delivering public facing events on behalf of the UK Polar Network. If you are a highly organised individual with an interest in working with volunteers and sharing polar science with the public, then this role is for you! The workload is typically heightened once every three months in line with event planning timelines and there are opportunities to travel within the UK. See https://tinyurl.com/3ra3p3z8 for more details.

Being part of the UKPN is the perfect way to expand your polar network, hear of unique opportunities first, develop your skills, help other early career researchers, and – of course – it's a load of fun. The UKPN is present at national and international events alongside local officials, governments, and leading scientists.

The role has handover notes from the previous volunteers, and the committee is on hand to support.

Please apply via the form https://tinyurl.com/3a9dk8zj by 21st August 2021.

We are looking forward to receiving your applications!

Arctic Horizon Scan 2022 Workshop in Oxford, 7-9 Sep

Hi UKPN members,

Please see below an announcement from the Oxford University Polar Forum. The deadline for in person attendance has been extended to August 10th if you are interested!

Arctic Horizon Scan 2022 Workshop in Oxford, 7-9 Sep

Over 7-9th September, delegates to the hybrid Arctic Horizon Scan 2022 Workshop will discuss and determine research priorities for the Arctic that will be important over the next decade. The diverse range of expertise and perspectives offered by delegates will help shape the Arctic research agenda, and ensure that research can meet the needs of the future.

Delegates will be able to attend in-person or online. The workshop will be based at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, and optional accommodation has been reserved for in-person delegates at St Peter's College, where there will be a workshop dinner on 8th Sep. All delegates will contribute to the publication of a peer-reviewed article outlining research priorities for the Arctic. Funds are available to support Indigenous delegates to attend.

Please visit https://www.polar.ox.ac.uk/horizon-scan-workshop/ for more information and registration links. In-person attendance requires a short application.

Please apply for in-person attendance by 10 Aug (deadline extended). Registration for online attendance closes 20 Aug.
