Welcome to the 2013-14 UK Polar Network!

Dear UKPN,

Just a quick "Hello" and update from this years UK Polar Network Committee, as elected at the AGM last month as part of the very successful Grant Writing Workshop held in Cambridge.

We have lots planned for this year, including a mentor panel at the IGS in Loughborough, workshops at the British Science Festival (Newcastle, September), presence at this years UK Arctic Science Conference, a Software and Polar Research Workshop (both at SPRI in September), and an outreach training event at some point in the year.  If any of these sound like your kind of thing, keep your ears open!

We also have a great new Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ukpolarnetwork?fref=ts where we'll be posting details of upcoming events, jobs and open positions, and relevant media articles. "Like" us to receive news and updates.

For all those Tweeters out there, get following @UKPolarNetwork  At most of our workshops and mentor panels, you can now Tweet us to get involved if you can't be there in person! If you're at an event that other members would be interested in, get Tweeting!

That's all for now...I will post details of this years committee on the Facebook page should you wish to contact a specific person, and we will soon have a brand new website where you can read more about us!

If you'd like to get involved with the committee, on either a long term basis or just for individual events, please do contact us.

Thanks,
Laura Hobbs

Volunteering opportunities with the International Polar Foundation

Dear UKPN

We have some volunteering opportunities, enabling you to engage with the general public. The International Polar Foundation workshops are fantastic! They have a host of interactive experiments and polar clothing to try out; it is really an enlightening activity.

Peak District Climate Festival: 4th May, Matlock, Derby. Running polar workshops, see attached event flyer. I will probably be able to help with this, but if anyone else is keen let me know!

Think Tank Birmingham Workshops in May half term (24th May to 1st June):

We are looking for some scientists amongst the UKPN to help run "Class Zero Emission" workshops at Think Tank Science Centre in Birmingham. The space set for these workshops is right in the middle of the science centre and it would be in the next to a brand new section (opening that day) Ardmann animations exhibition of the "Pirates In an Adventure with Scientists" film. So it should be pretty busy! We would also like to hold something like a "Meet the Scientist" each day, depending on who is able to come along. All training for the workshops will be provided.

IPF workshop training session: Derby, 21st May - a really useful course to attend, see all the resources, and meet some teachers.

Please let me know if you are interesting in helping the above events, or if you would like to attend the IPF workshop training session.

All the best,

FW: Announcement: CLIVAR Early Career Scientist Network

Hello all,
There's probably some overlap between UKPN members, and people for whom this new network wants to be relevant.
If this sounds interesting to you, get involved, and contact Jen at jennifer.riley@noc.ac.uk

Amélie

CLIVAR Early Career Scientist network

CLIVAR
<http://www.clivar.org?utm_source=Early+Career+Scientists&utm_campaign=34a8afbccf-ECS_Newsletter3_19_2013&utm_medium=email>

(Variability and predictability of the ocean-atmosphere system) is one of the four core projects of the World Climate Research Programme <http://www.wcrp-climate.org/?utm_source=Early+Career+Scientists&utm_campaign=34a8afbccf-ECS_Newsletter3_19_2013&utm_medium=email>

(WCRP). CLIVAR's mission is to facilitate observation analysis and prediction of changes in the Earth's climate system, with a focus on ocean-atmosphere interactions, enabling better understanding of climate variability, predictability, and change, to the benefit of society and the environment in which we live.

CLIVAR is in the process of setting up an Early Career Scientist network <http://www.clivar.org/ECS?utm_source=Early+Career+Scientists&utm_campaign=34a8afbccf-ECS_Newsletter3_19_2013&utm_medium=email>.

Therefore we all have a very unique opportunity to shape the way and define the future path that this network will take.

For a network like this to become successful in the long term we need to have a grassroots approach to its development. What is it that you want? How do you want the network to develop?

Ultimately we need you, your enthusiasm, skills, ideas and participation within the network.

To be eligible you must be within the first 5 years of your PhD.

If you have any comments, ideas or thoughts you would like to share with us it would be great to hear from you. Contact Jen <mailto:jennifer.riley@noc.ac.uk?subject=CLIVAR%20ECS%20Network> at the International CLIVAR Project Office.

We at CLIVAR look forward to working with you and developing this network.

Are you going to EGU 2013?
CLIVAR will be hosting a Townhall meeting called 'Tomorrow's CLIVAR'.
This town hall meeting will provide an opportunity to explore new directions for CLIVAR, with a focus on the role of the oceans in climate and on climate of the oceans. In particular CLIVAR is interested in the emerging needs of the early career scientist community. We would love to see you there!
Date: Monday 8th April

ECS Survey

We have put together a short (5 minute) survey asking what opportunities you would like to have within the CLIVAR ECS network. These are just a few ideas we have come up with and, you might find that they are not what you want, or you can think of something better. That is why we want you to participate in the survey.
Tell us what you want!

Once we have collated your responses we will be able to present the results to the CLIVAR scientific steering group and work, together with you, to further develop these ideas and initiatives.
Complete the survey now!

IGS-British Branch - UKPN activities

Dear All,

The IGS-BB meeting is to be held in Loughborough this September (see below). We have a slot for a UKPN mentor panel, following the previous success of these sessions, in addition to a polar film festival.

Menor Panel:
If you have an idea for the topic, or if you would like to organise the session, please get in touch. It only takes a small amount of organisation, yet allows you to build contacts with many esteemed academics that you may not have otherwise had links to... A great way to get your name out there!

Film Festival:
The film festival is a public engagement event, formed of a series of short films followed by a public debate. We currently have Frozen Planet, dye experiments in Greenland and Life at the South Pole. If you have a short film (~3 mins) describing your research that you would like to be considered for the early career section of the event, please get in touch.

We look forward to welcoming you to Loughborough!

All the best,

Ella

TRAVEL & DIRECTIONS

Loughborough is at the heart of England in the northernmost part of the county of Leicestershire and being centrally placed it is well served by road, rail and air. Main line road and rail networks link Loughborough directly with the rest of the country and the town itself is served by excellent bus services. Loughborough University is less than two miles away from junction 23 of the M1 motorway. London is one-and-a-half hours away by train, Birmingham one hour and Manchester and Leeds around two hours. There are regular scheduled flights from UK, European and international destinations to East Midlands Airport, only 7 miles away.

Travelling by Car

Loughborough's nearest motorway link is the M1; the campus is just two miles from Junction 23. The university is clearly signed on all the other main approach roads to Loughborough.

Travelling by Coach or Bus

Coach and bus services to and from other parts of Leicestershire and the UK operate from the centre of Loughborough. Travel by National Express or regional bus services to Loughborough then connect with local Kinch bus town services to the Loughborough University campus. The University Shuttle bus service (Kinchbus Number 7) commences from Loughborough Railway station and brings you straight to campus (note that the meeting takes place outside of term time).

Travelling by Rail

Regular services operate between Loughborough and other main line towns - including daily trains to and from London St Pancras International, 90 minutes away. Once at Loughborough's railway station you are just ten minutes away from the campus. From here there is a regular bus service which operates every ten minutes during term time. Taxis to the campus are normally available from the station.

Travelling by Air

East Midlands Airport is only 7 miles away and offers both domestic and international flights.
