Fw: Looking for a Polar School Outreach Co-ordinator

From: Antony Jinman <jinman.antony@gmail.com>

Good afternoon UKPN,

I currently looking to for a someone to join my team and help visit schools across the UK and overseas promoting polar science and education. It is a full time position and can suit a newly graduated student who wishes to further develop their CV. We're always pretty busy and normally run around 100 plus events and visits a year.

I was wondering if you might know of anyone who might like to get involved or would be able to help spread the word? I have attached a pdf of the job description and the web link for any social media links is http://www.etelivelearning.org/Job-Vacancy---Educational-Outreach-Coordinator

I'd be delighted if you could help in any way

Many thanks
Antony

Pole to Paris Campaign – Outreach Opportunities

Hi everyone,

I met a few of you at the Science and Society Workshop last year. I'm currently involved in a project called Pole to Paris (www.poletoparis.com) which is a public awareness campaign highlighting the importance of climate change to people across the world in the run up to the UN Climate Summit (COP21) in December this year, and we are looking for people to help organise some outreach events when the Northern Run part of the campaign reaches the UK in September and October. Read on if you might be interested in getting involved…..

The Pole to Paris campaign has two parts: the Southern Cycle from Brisbane, Australia to Paris, and the Northern Run from Tromsø, Norway to Paris, following 2 recent PhD graduates on their journey to COP21. The Southern Cycle has been under way for several months, and the Northern run started 2 weeks ago. Both have so far gained huge support in the countries they've visited, giving school presentations on climate, interviewing research institutions working with or influenced by climate change, and focusing on possibilities for a greener future (you can see what they've been up to here: https://www.facebook.com/poletoparis?fref=ts).

In October and November, the Northern Run will be passing through the United Kingdom having covered almost 2,000km in Norway. This section of the run will be a 27-day relay , commencing on October 17th in Edinburgh and finishing on November 13th/14th in London. The organising team is really keen to arrange some climate outreach, discussion sessions, question panels and school events at the major cities en-route to coincide with the run passing through. At the moment these include Edinburgh, Newcastle, Durham, York, Lincoln, Cambridge and London.

We are currently after contacts in any and all of these locations who might be interested in getting involved in hosting events to coincide with the run passing through. One of the areas we're particularly looking for contacts to organise something is Cambridge, so if anybody in that region might be interested in getting involved that would be great. Additionally we're also still on the look out for runners to take part in the relay, so if anyone wanted to get involved in that way as well or instead you would also be more than welcome.

If you're at all interested in getting involved in any way or have any questions, please get in touch with me on clare.howes@hotmail.co.uk and we can chat a bit more.

Many thanks,

Clare

Practical use of mini- and micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for the Environmental Sciences

****Extended deadline: 11th August 2015 ****

I would like to draw your attention to a new NERC funded training initiative: "Practical use of mini- and micro-Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for the Environmental Sciences", to be hosted at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) in Oban 24th-28th August 2015.  This 3.5-day course aims to cover the main aspects of legally an safely using UAVs for NERC orientated science in ways which maximize data collection and validity. We have designed this initiative to be as hands-on (and weatherproof) as possible and delegates will use small UAVs to perform indoor and outdoor 'missions' to demonstrate the processes and procedures required for successful UAV campaigns.

There are 12 places on the course, and priority will be given to post-graduate students and early career researchers with at least 50% NERC funding. Hostel accommodation, food and reasonable UK travel costs will be included.  The application deadline is extended until  11th Aug 2015.

Feel free to contact me directly with any questions.

Kind regards,

Rick Thomas

Fwd: [APECS] New APECS Mailing List and Membership registration

Dear UKPN,

Please see below for information regarding the new way to register with APECS (the international organisation of which the UKPN is a national committee). Everyone will have to re-register to remain on the email list and as a member. We recommend you do this to stay up to date with Polar news and receive opportunities and notifications from the international community - it just takes a minute or two.

Thanks,
Laura Hobbs.

To: apecs <apecs@tek.iarc.uaf.edu>

Dear APECS members,

Since the creation of APECS during the last International Polar Year, more than 5100  people from 75 countries have registered as APECS members on our website. Until now, it was not easy to update profile details or cancel APECS membership using the website. To make managing the membership database more efficient, we are migrating to a new service. The old APECS mailing list will stop being used on 1 October 2015. We need you, as current or past APECS members, to choose one of the following options:
  • To remain an APECS member and continue to be subscribed to our mailing list, please update your profile (it only takes 2 minutes!) on our new member registration system. Note: You MUST fill in this form to remain an APECS member. We will NOT automatically move our members over to this new system.
  • To cancel your APECS membership and unsubscribe from our mailing list, please go to our unsubscribe form
You do not consider yourself "early career" anymore and / or are a mentor or partner of APECS and want to remain updated on APECS activities? You can choose to either register for full APECS membership or you can register as a mentor or partner and select which types of announcements you wish to receive from APECS.

Many thanks for your collaboration in this process! Please email info@apecs.is if you have any questions.
