Science and Society Workshop: 22nd & 23rd April

Dear UKPN,

Happy New Year from all of us here on the committee, hope you had a great festive period and wishing you all the best for a successful 2014.

We have been busy planning our next big workshop, which will be held at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton on the 22nd and 23rd April 2014. ***SAVE THE DATE!***

"Science and Society - do they have to be Poles apart?" will feature as a two day workshop, covering a variety of ways of getting your research "out there" other than publishing papers.

The programme is yet to be finalised, but to give you an idea of the sort of sessions we will be including, please see below:
  • Social Media
  • School outreach (with training to be provided by the International Polar Foundation)
  • Code sharing and open source software (for those that missed the Software Workshop in Cambridge, this will be a short summary workshop)
  • Presenting at conferences
  • Press Releases
  • Successfully presenting your data graphically
  • Photography and film

Current funding often requires candidates to show that they are making an effort to make their research accessible to those outside the scientific realm, and we all know the importance of educating the young in important issues such as climate change. We know this can be as daunting as it is essential, so these workshops are designed to make you more comfortable in taking your science outside the lab, and bringing the public into the field.

We have been fortunate to receive funding from the British Antarctic Territory (part of the Foreign Commission Office) under their Education and Outreach aims, which will cover the costs of the conference and also allow us to support a number of undergraduates to attend the workshop from across the country.

For now…keep the date free, and keep an eye for emails regarding the conference. There will be a registration period coming up soon, so please make sure that you do not miss this.

Many Thanks,
Laura Hobbs

EUROFLEETS2 offers a unique opportunity to get fully funded access to European Research Vessels.

Next ship-time call will be:
 - november 2013 (already open): call for North Atlantic, Polar, North and Baltic Sea and embarked equipment;
 - end of march/beginning of April 2014: Mediterranean and marginal Seas.

The workshop will give European early career scientists with good ideas/projects the opportunity:
1.      to take advantage of the presence of "EUROFLEETS2 personnel" for questions or concerns relating to the calls;
2.      to have a meeting point for research groups which already plan to submit a proposal to the EUROFLEETS regional calls;
3.      to get in contact with other colleagues interested to submit a proposal in the same area (or: to find other colleagues interested to submit a proposal in the same area).

Participation is FREE and open to European young scientists and PhD students (in the latest stage of their doctorate) in marine related sciences.

Deadline for application is January 10th 2014.
