Polar Pen pals - Antarctic Experience

Hi all,

Sorry for another email about polar pen pals, but thank you so much to everyone who has responded so far. I have managed to match a number of schools already.

We have had quite a few schools looking for pen pals that have had experience in Antarctica. Is there anyone else out there who feels they may be able to respond to a letter or two from primary and secondary school students studying Antarctica.

The types of requests we have had include:

  • Wildlife in Antarctica
  • Ice sheets and glaciers
  • Climate change and how it is affecting Antarctica.
  • What it is like to live on Antarctica

If you are able to help then please let me know 😊

Many thanks

UK Polar Pen Pal Requests

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all well.

This year I have taken on the role of Education and Outreach alongside Robyn.

We have had a few polar pen pal requests in, and I was wondering whether anyone would be able to volunteer themselves to write back to some students. This is a really fun outreach activity and students love to hear about the jobs you do and the experiences that you have! Students will send a letter with questions in and then you simply write back to them answering those questions! We have both primary and secondary schools writing and they can ask the most amazing questions.

Our current requests are:

School

Age group

Area of interest

New End Primary, Camden, London

Primary – ages 6 -12

Focus on life as a researcher or about the different animals and their habitat in either the Arctic or Antarctic.

Bolder Academy

Year 8 – ages 12/13

Weather and climate in either the Arctic or Antarctic – what is the weather like, what data is taken about the weather, why is this useful etc.

Felpham

Year 7 – ages 11/12

Global challenges – what is happening to Antarctica, why is Antarctica important

St Bedes Inter-Church school

Year 9 – ages 13/14

Glaciation, importance of glaciers

Broughton High School

Year 8 – ages 12/13

Glaciation and polar regions

If you think you would be able to help with this project then please email me back and I can then match you with the students. Email addresses can be exchanged, and the pen pal activity can begin! Alternatively if you have any questions about the projects then please let know!

Many thanks

Polar Pride Day 2021

With the start of Polar Week, our countdown to Polar Pride Day on the 18th November has begun! With 2 months to go we would like to invite you to join the UK Polar Network, and our partners in the British Antarctic Survey and the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative in celebrating this day with your organisations and institutions.

Polar Pride Day launched in 2020 with participation from 49 countries with over 2000 tweets, 35 news stories and a global reach of over 12.8 million people! In 2021 we want to build on this success and take the Polar Pride message to an even bigger audience and we need your help to do it.

A particular highlight of last year were the images of celebrations in the field. If you have plans to celebrate at either pole, at your institute or virtually, please make sure that you take some photos or video to share on the day. Please see the attached pdf and jpeg for ideas for running your own event.

Please share widely, stay in touch and let us know what you'll be getting up to!

Best wishes,

Madeline Anderson & Victoria Dutch

Volunteers Needed - In person event at NMM - 24-27th October

Hi all,

We (UK Polar Network Festivals Coordinators) are looking for volunteers for the National Maritime Museum's Polar festival from Sunday 24th - Wednesday 27th October 2021. They are located in Greenwich, London.

You need to be available from 10:00 - 17:00. We are hoping to have "day shifts" as opposed to morning vs afternoon for fluidity. You will of course get breaks!

We will cover travel expenses to and from the NMM. Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. If you don't live within a commutable distance to NMM and you can volunteer for the whole period, then we will cover accommodation costs.

Each volunteer will receive UKPN merchandise to wear during the event.

You will get free access to the museum to explore before and after the event.

We are looking for individuals to run kids' science experiments, talks, workshops, or would like to generally be available at a UKPN stall. At this stage both ourselves and NMM are flexible in terms of schedule and structure, so any idea is a good idea.

Please fill in this form by 1st October if you are interested in helping out: https://forms.gle/7AaaZWrgSzJow8sV8

Please direct any questions to Chloe and Eva at festivals@polarnetwork.org :)

Kind regards,
Chloe and Eva

Research in Svalbard: An APECS workshop

Dear UKPN members,

On Monday 1st November APECS Norway will be organizing a free workshop regarding research in Svalbard. This 1-day workshop will be held in the historic Tøyen hovedgård in central Oslo's botanical gardens and is a side event to the Svalbard Science Conference (2-3 November, Oslo). The event is co-organized with APECS Russia and the UK Polar Network and we have a number of international keynote lecturers confirmed. Several of you joined us for a workshop in 2019.

Registration is now open at the link below:

Thanks to the Norwegian Research Council there is travel support available (register before October 12) and will be prioritised to those attending the Svalbard Science Conference. We are working on options to potentially stream this event, but it is not confirmed.

We look forward to seeing you in Oslo!

Please circulate to any colleagues.

Regards,

Saule

infographics 1 day training course for UKPN

Hi everyone,

Since we’re all doing a lot more online now, there’s a real need for us all to be able communicate our research effectively, and clear graphics are an important part of this. To help our UKPN members we’ve organised a 1 day infographics training course with Infohackit on 19th October (10am – 5pm). The course will be run online and cover the following:

  • Introduction to great design - in this lively session we look at the key concepts of composition, type, colour and images that are the foundations for any visual project
  • Essential Affinity Designer training - after a short break you will receive instruction in using Affinity Designer. This is a professional standard software that offers a user-friendly option at an accessible price point.
  • Design skills for infographics - following a well-deserved lunch break, we will continue to work in Affinity Designer and look at techniques that are especially useful for creating infographics, such as illustration
  • Creating your own graphic - utilising the concepts and skills you have acquired throughout the day, you will begin work on your own graphic. This could be based on your own research or a paper you know well.

See attached flyer for the full details.

This course has been funded by the UK Polar Network for early career polar researchers, as part of our role to support the development and training of researchers in the early stages. Places are very limited and so please only sign up if you are definitely able to attend for the whole day.

To register, fill in the form here: https://forms.office.com/r/jmJ15PgG0S

Registration will close on 12th Oct or when capacity is reached.

All the best,

Anna
