PhD Studentship @ BAS - The Variability of the Earth's electron radiation belt

Hi everyone,

Hope you don’t mind, but would it be possible to circulate to any relevant contacts you have please.

PhD Studentship – The variability of the Earth’s electron radiation belt

Supervisors: Prof. Richard Horne (Lead Supervisor) (BAS), Dr Giulio Del Zanna (University of Cambridge), Dr Sarah Glauert (BAS)

Closing date for applications extended to 30th April 2020

The Earth’s electron radiation belts consist of high energy (relativistic) electrons which are trapped by the Earth’s external magnetic field and which circulate around the Earth.  The electron flux is highly variable and causes damage to electronic components on satellites via charging and discharges.  Applications are invited for an exciting PhD studentship research project to study the variability of the Earth’s outer radiation belt, and to increase the forecasting accuracy of current prediction codes.

Many thanks

Ali

Standardized methods across Permafrost Landscapes: from Arctic Soils to Hydrosystems

Morning everyone,

Hope you’re all staying happy and healthy and getting out for a blast of sunshine if you can. See below a message from the International Permafrost Association Action group, looking to gather information from the soil-hydrosystem sampling community. Check it out if you can help.

Cheers J

IPA SPLASH needs your input!

Find out about SPLASH in this recently published article: http://www.aps-polar.org/paper/2020/31/03/A200407000001/full

What is SPLASH? The International Permafrost Association Action Group called ‘Standardized methods across Permafrost Landscapes: from Arctic Soils to Hydrosystems’ (SPLASH, http://www.splash.biogeochimie.fr) is a community-driven effort aiming to provide a suite of standardized field strategies for sampling mineral and organic components in soils, sediments, and water across permafrost landscapes.

We need your help: To help us gather important information and design standardized approaches for this Action Group, we prepared a brief online survey to collect input from researchers who sample along the soil-to-hydrosystem continuum (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScNXbcskxqz-XYZR6EDzNDDzCzEzyHgSAxIY221dkKUXTin4A/viewform).

#EURegionsWeek, Master Class on EU Cohesion Policy, 11-15 October, Brussels

Dear list members,

We hope this message finds you well. In face of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the organisers would like to communicate that they remain committed to take part at the #EURegionsWeek as foreseen later this year – 11-15 October in Brussels. The #EURegionsWeek is the biggest annual Brussels-based event dedicated to regional policy. This free event serves as a platform for discussing and showcasing the development of EU cohesion policy and making decision-makers more aware of the importance of regions and cities in EU policymaking. More details can be found at https://europa.eu/regions-and-cities/home_en As part of the 18th #EURegionsWeek, the fully-funded Master Class on EU Cohesion Policy will be held for PhD students and early-career researchers for the eighth time.

The Master Class on EU Cohesion Policy is organised by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO)and the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) advised by the Regional Studies Association European Foundation (RSA Europe) and with the cooperation of the European Regional Science Association (ERSA) and the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP).

The Master Class is a unique format to connect aspiring researchers and will include presentations of papers by the participants as well as lectures and panel debates with policymakers, EU officials and senior academics from throughout Europe to improve understanding of, and research, on EU Cohesion Policy. In particular, the Master Class will serve to:

  • discuss recent research on European regional and urban development and EU Cohesion Policy;
  • enable PhD students and early career researchers to exchange views and network with policymakers, EU officials and senior European academics;
  • raise awareness and understanding of the research potential in the field of EU Cohesion Policy.

Participants

  • 30 attendees from EU Member States and non-EU countries will be invited to attend the Master Class
  • applications are being sought from PhD students and early career researchers (defined as being within five years of the date on their PhD certificate or equivalent);
  • the organisers will cover and arrange travel and accommodation of all selected participants;
  • there is no fee to attend the Master Class.

The application deadline is 4th May 2020, 11.00 am CET.
