Public Engagement Training Opportunity

Hi All,

Due to the Covid-19 situation we (UKPN Committee) have been unable to connect with you in person at conferences and festivals, and have had to cancel other engagement activities you may have been involved in such as school visits. However, we would like to offer some virtual training opportunities for improving public engagement skills!

Would you be interested in attending a free public engagement workshop series? Please register your interest here!

For more information:

Title of training: Public Engagement Project management SOS: How to get the most out of your public engagement project, led by Dr Sophie Morris
Structure of the training: Total training time of 5 hours split over 3 sessions with some reflective based learning in between
Session 1 (2 hours): Public engagement and impact
Session 2 (2 hours): Managing public engagement projects
Session 3 (1 hours): Personal project plan sharing and reflections

After we have an estimate on numbers of those who would be interested in participating we will be in touch with further details about how to apply for the workshop.

We hope you are all managing at this uncertain time. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance and we look forward to hearing from you about this particular support we'd like to offer!

Kind Regards,
Chloe Nunn

Doctoral student position on Arctic benthic biodiversity and functioning

Hi All,

I forward this PhD opportunities as it might be of interest for some of you.

Dear Colleague (sorry for any cross postings),

We have announced a new doctoral student position on "Impact of multiple drivers on Arctic benthic biodiversity and functioning" at Environmental and Marine Biology and Åbo Akademi University.

The aim of this PhD project is to examine potential ecosystem tipping cascades linked to the seafloor and benthic invertebrate communities. The focus is to i) identify large-scale spatiotemporal taxonomic and functional changes in Arctic benthic communities, and to ii) examine the drivers, mechanisms and effects of these changes, with focus on carbon export to the seafloor and food web transfer. The work will involve assessment of community shifts due to multiple stressors through analysis of existing spatiotemporal sets of zoobenthic data as well as empirical zoobenthic sampling. The project will particularly apply and develop the trait-based approach for Arctic benthic organisms and functioning.

The PhD study is part of the recently launched H2020 ECOTIP project that will investigate ecosystem tipping points and their cascading effects in the Arctic. The doctoral student will be joining a dynamic and vibrant team of researchers and PhD students at Environmental and Marine Biology, which is a key part of ÅAUs strategic and interdisciplinary research profile The Sea.

For more information about the doctoral position and how to apply, please see the add:

We greatly appreciate any help in distributing this position in your networks!

Kind regards,
Anna, Marie and Erik

Respond ASAP: Volunteer Opportunity at Nottingham Primary School Parliament Online Event

Hi All,

The Nottingham Primary Parliament for year six students has been in touch seeking an Antarctic scientist to help with their online Zoom event on the 7th and 9th of July. It's organised by Ignite!

These are the details:
  • Kids are split over two sessions, one on the 7th, one on the 9th of July (the Antarctic scientist doesn't have to be the same for both days)
  • They will be physically together in their bubbles - so about six kids together from each school (about four to six schools on each day) and then the schools will be connected to one another via zoom.
  • Day's activities would start with a warm up (potentially origami penguins) followed by an introduction to the day's theme from the organisers (Antarctica and climate).
  • The Antarctic scientist would deliver a 15 to 20 minute presentation at around 10:30am
  • The presentation should include scientific overview of Antarctica, how and why you became a polar researcher, and at the end should set the students an Antarctic/climate themed challenge (developing this content would be supported by the organisers of the event)
  • The kids would go off and complete their challenge, and would present back to councillors at the end of the day
  • They are eager to support a female and/or BAME Antarctic scientist if possible
  • There will be a group of students with physical and learning disabilities attending on the 9th
Ignite! have a meeting on Friday morning to finalise logistical plans and would like to know before Friday morning if we have a/some volunteer/s

Let me know as soon as you can if you are interested and available on the 7th and/or 9th of July to support this event! Please provide your availability, a little blurb about you, your work, and your experience working with kids if you are interested!

Cheers,

Chloe Nunn

Climate Justice in the Arctic: an emerging research agenda

Dear UKPN member,

The following webinar might be of interest to you. The Centre for Climate justice is hosting a webinar titled “Climate Justice in the Arctic: An emerging research agenda” on Wednesday, 10th June from 4PM to 5:30PM British Summer Time (BST). The event is an opportunity to learn more about climate justice and social science research in the region and engage with speakers from the University of Washington, the University of Lapland and GCU: all members of the Climate Justice in the Arctic thematic network at the University of the Arctic (UArctic).

Please consider joining for three short presentations by the speakers, a Q&A session and group discussions (held entirely online). Attendees will be invited to reflect on the current progress and needs of this growing field of research, contribute their views and ideas towards a research agenda for climate justice in the Arctic, and lay the foundations for joint research projects, partnerships and collaborations. For more details and to register, please go to the webinar Eventbrite page. The session link will be shared with the registrants in a separate e-mail closer to the event date.

Thanks,

UKPN Team
