Paid school outreach opportunity

Hi All,

Please have a look at email below for details and contact, if interested.

Opportunity for freelance work - £100 to £150 per day

Education through Expeditions (ETE) is a not-for-profit organisation which has been running Polar education outreach activities, 'Polar Fun Days,' for both primary and secondary schools for over 10 years. We are currently looking to expand our freelance outreach ambassadors, who are responsible for the delivery of school visits and workshops. The ideal candidate for this position should have a passion for the Polar Regions, have experience of work or travel in the Arctic or Antarctic, from either an adventure or science background and should wish to share their experience with young people. This position will be ideal for a recent graduate or student who is looking to further develop their science communication skills, and who has been to the Polar Regions and is willing to share their stories and running workshops.

All travel, expenses and accommodation will be covered in addition to the freelance wage.

We do urgently require an ambassador to cover school visits on the 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th Sept.

If you are interested in these dates, or would like to put yourself forward for future work, please contact Antony and Vici on antony@liketobe.org with an email of interest.

Many thanks,

Archana.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder that signups for this workshop close in a week, we still have a few space remaining so don't delay, sign up here . I'll be uploading a provisional schedule to our website next week but I can confirm we have speakers from UCL, MSSL, InterMine (University of Cambridge), Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling and industry, with sessions including:

The Pareto Principle and Software Engineering - getting 80% of the benefits with 20% of the work
Open Scientific Code using Git and GitHub
Intro to Google Earth Engine

We also have some exciting projects planned for the hackday or you are welcome to propose your own :)

Hope to see you there!

Hi UKPN!

  • Do you write any code?
  • Have you ever come back to your code from 6 months ago and had no idea why it doesn't work any more (or what it even does)??
  • Does your code mysteriously stop working overnight even though you're sure you didn't change anything?
  • Do you ever wish you could get back your lovely code from last week that worked just fine before you changed it?
  • Do you use (or will you use) any kind of software in your research at all?

If you answer yes to any of the above then this workshop is for you! We are holding a free day long workshop at UCL on September 18th on polar software which will cover everything from version control and writing better code to specific software used in polar research. We have a range of speakers from academia, as well as some who have taken the software skills they have learnt from academia into industry.

Apply here now! Limited help with travel costs are available. Registration is free, deadline is August 31st. If you're not already convinced (and you really should be) there's free lunch too J

This workshop is for all early career polar researchers no matter your level of experience, masters, PhD and beyond and has been partially funded by the Software Sustainability Institute.

We also encourage all participants to stay for our polar sciences hack day on September 19th- we will be encouraging students from other disciplines (e.g. physics, computer sciences) to come along and work on some polar problems for a day so even if you don't think you're great at coding here is your chance to get some help from those who are, and put into practice the skills you learn during the workshop.

Hi UKPN,

Could any UK early career researchers attending the UArctic Congress in Helsinki on the 7th September get in touch asap? There may be an opportunity to attending a networking event with the UK Science and Innovation Network but we need to hear from you this week!

Thanks,
Sammie
