*Position description summary:*

* *

*The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) has a
permanent position vacant as Professor / Associate Professor in marine
botany. The position is attached to the Department of Arctic and Marine
Biology (AMB) and the research group Arctic Marine System Ecology (AMSE)
in Tromsø.*

* *

*The Department of Arctic and Marine Biology (AMB) includes six research
groups distributed across several buildings. Research and teaching at
AMB has a broad span, from molecular mechanisms at cellular/subcellular
levels via studies of adaptations at the organismal level, to ecological
interactions in aquatic and terrestrial environments. The Institute is
an exciting and cutting-edge academic and research unit in biology that
addresses professional challenges in basic research, industrial and
administrative-oriented research with a strong focus on North. The
Institute has extensive national and international research
collaboration. The staff counts 53 permanent scientists, 26 technicians,
7 administrative positions and 60 temporary employees (researchers,
postdocs, PhD research fellows, technicians).*

* *

*The new hire is expected to contribute to AMSE research through
research proposals, method developments, field and/or experimental
studies, scientific collaboration and publications. Interest in broader
public outreach is expected. The thematic focus for this position is on
marine pelagic primary producers, their ecology and functioning in the
ecosystem. The new hire will have responsibilities for the development,
structuring and teaching of university courses in marine botany in
general, with a focus on knowledge about algal species, biodiversity,
and algal ecology from micro- to macroalgae.*

* *

*Teaching will include supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and
graduate student theses on bachelor, MSc and PhD level. The new hire is
expected to participate in ship based and field based teaching
activities. BFE and AMB have a strong focus on excellence in teaching
and student mentorship as well as the continuous development of teaching
methods. Here the new hire is expected to contribute and strengthen
these efforts.*

* *

*Qualification requirements*

*Minimum requirements for this position include a Norwegian PhD degree
in marine botany or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised
as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or similar qualification.*

* *

*We are looking for a marine biologist with strong national and
international scientific network, who will contribute and strengthen our
general marine biology competence, research on pelagic primary producers
and teaching on primary producers in northern marine ecosystems. We
expect a research focus on microalgae, but teaching will include topics
on micro- and macroalgae. Candidates must document their experience in
initiating externally funded research relevant to this position, as well
as having a related strong publication record in international
peer-reviewed journals as well as participation and contributions in
national and international scientific meetings relevant to this position.*

* *

*The successful applicant must have documented competence and interest
in marine algal species, biodiversity and ecology, including the
determination of primary production. An interest in the role of algae as
primary producers in marine ecosystems is required. Participation in
field going research and experimental studies will be an important part
of research, and the new hire is expected to participate in research
and/or teaching ship cruises for several weeks. Candidates should
document their experience in field based and experimental research and
teaching, preferably from northern or polar marine areas. Documented
experience in quantitative methods, biostatistics, and modeling will be
considered favorably.*

* *

*We are looking for applicants with a strong commitment to teaching and
student mentoring at the university level. Excellent written and oral
communication skills are a requirement in both English and Norwegian or
a Scandinavian language, with an option of a 3-year learning period for
the Norwegian language. *

* *

*Team work is a requirement for both teaching and research, and we are
looking for a colleague with excellent cooperation skills and positive
attitude, which both will be strongly considered.*

* *

*All applicants for teaching and research positions shall document their
teaching competence in their application by attaching a teaching
portfolio. In exceptional cases, practical teaching skills may be
assessed as being equal to formal teaching qualification.*
