New Researchers in the Spotlight Article with Simone Farina
📢 We spoke to Simone Farina, a dedicated researcher at Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn who specialises in studying the human impact on marine benthic ecosystems. For EuroMarine, he led the MuMSUMed Foresight workshop, focusing on the development of a roadmap for holistic fishery management of fish-sea urchin-marine forest systems. MBON Europe Hands-On Workshop Bologna

The long-term working group MBON Europe is organising an in-person hands-on workshop as part of the EuroMarine General Assembly in Bologna on the 12th of February. The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network for Europe (MBON Europe) is a Long Term Scientific Working Group funded by EuroMarine. Flash Survey EuroMarine 2024
Deadline: 1st Feb 2024

We have created a survey to decide the future EuroMarine calls for funding and services to be provided by the network in 2024. We invite all EuroMarine members to complete the survey no later than Thursday 1st February 2024. The results of this survey will be used at the EuroMarine General Assembly Meeting on the 14th of February in Bologna to make a decision on future calls based on member opinion.

The program is available to Early Career Researchers working in Europe. PhD Project on Interactive Effects Between Foundation Species in Subarctic Marine Intertidal Environments

A PhD project is available in collaboration with the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC), the Université du Québec à Rimouski (UQAR), and Canterbury University on the topic: "Interactive effects between foundation species in subarctic marine intertidal environments." The general aim of the project is to characterise the importance and mechanisms behind positive interactions between foundation species in subarctic environments. More precisely, the PhD project will i) delineate the importance, effects and mechanisms behind facilitating cascades in subarctic environments; ii) verify whether facilitating cascades are maintained along an environmental gradient; and iii) examine the nature and temporal evolution of positive interactions in eelgrass and mussels.

The Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University invites applications for a faculty position in "climate change and social science" to begin in July 2024. The department is seeking applicants whose research is solution-oriented, focusing on the transition to a low-carbon economy (mitigation) and/or adapting to unavoidable climate change. PhD project: Sustainable restoration of the European Oyster in the face of environmental change

A fully funded PhD project is available with Bangor University and the University of Plymouth. The PhD project focuses on sustainable restoration of the European Oyster in the face of environmental change. The project aims to provide evidence on the relative performance of the native European oyster Ostrea edulis and the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas to deliver ecosystem services under global change known to individually affect organism health and functioning (here warming and artificial light at night, ALAN).

2024 PhD and Postdoc Scholarships on "Climate and anthropogenic changes in the Arctic"

Applications are now open for the 'Climate and anthropogenic changes in the Arctic' Scholarships under the Mobility Confap Italy Program in collaboration with the University of Bologna! Arctic near-surface temperatures have warmed nearly four times faster than the global average since 1979 and Svalbard is located at a hotspot for this warming. Major examples of implications of this warming are seen in the fjord systems on the west coast of Spitsbergen, including Kongsfjorden. As such, there are a number of research priorities that are critical for understanding and managing this important Arctic region. This program includes research work at the University of Bologna and at the Institute of Polar Research – National Research Council in Italy.

Pathways Connecting Climate Changes to the Deep Ocean Workshop

After the success of the First International Congress on Marine Flavobacteria held in Cargèse, Corsica in June 2018, CNRS are pleased to announce the holding of a Second Congress in Roscoff, Brittany from May 27-31 2024. Although growing substantially in recent years, the scientific community working on marine flavobacteria is still rather fragmented. The congress "Marine Flavobacteria – Roscoff - 2024" aims at gathering the most active scientists on the different aspects of the ecology and biology of these fascinating microorganisms. Keynotes will also highlight major breakthroughs that have been achieved on the Bacteroidota phylum.

Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (SZN) has now opened the registration and fellowships for the next World Seagrass Conference (WSC2024) as well as for the 15th International Seagrass Biology Workshop (ISBW15) that will be held in Napoli (Italy) in June 2024. WSC24 entitled "Seagrasses in the Anthropocene" will focus on three main themes: 1) Seagrass responses to environmental change; 2) Seagrass community diversity and species interactions; 3) Seagrass conservation, management and citizen science.

Abstract Submission Open for AMEMR Conference 2024

​The 7th AMEMR conference is taking place in Plymouth, UK from 8-11 July 2024. Abstract Submission is now open until the 15th of December 2023! AMEMR (Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research) Symposium series provides an opportunity to present, discuss and learn about a wide variety of marine modelling challenges, methods, applications and outcomes. Over the years AMEMR has grown into the forum to present and absorb the latest developments in marine (eco)system modelling and discuss new challenges and opportunities. It is a great place to develop networks and we encourage Early Career Researcher involvement.

7th PAGES Open Science Meeting

The 7th OSM and 5th YSM meetings will focus on "the Earth System Changes from the Past towards the Future". Open Call for Marine Biodiversity Data Holders - DTO BioFlow
Deadline: 17 January 2024 
The Horizon Europe project "Integration of biodiversity monitoring data into the Digital Twin Ocean" (DTO-BioFlow) has launched an Open Call for marine biodiversity data offering up to 60,000€ for institutions that manage marine biodiversity data. This call is for marine biodiversity data holders who can contribute to the DTO-BioFlow project by establishing ingestion pipelines to the EU DTO and thereby increasing the flow of relevant biodiversity data. This Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) grant can provide support to do so, by funding resources as well as facilitating a data training workshop for the selected applicants.

EDITO's Call for Ocean Twinning Projects Across Europe

The European Digital Twin Ocean (EDITO) has invited ocean twinning projects and national initiatives across Europe to become part of its platform. Led by EDITO-Infra, this call aims to strengthen the European Digital Twin Ocean. Selected applicants will be showcased at the Digital Ocean Forum 2024. The call for Expressions of Interest is a key step in EDITO's roadmap to engage the EU's diverse digital ecosystem in the development of the Digital Twin Ocean. The aim is to foster interoperability efforts and shape the features and visibility of the European Digital Twin Ocean.

M.A.R.E Invites Early Career Researchers to Sail the Mediterranean Sea
Deadline: 15 February 2024 
Within the scope of the M.A.R.E. (Marine Adventure for Research & Education) project, born in 2022 from an initiative of the Centro Velico Caprera (CVC) in collaboration with One Ocean Foundation as a scientific partner, and now at its third edition, the Foundation is offering the possibility to students and young researchers from international universities to sail on board the catamaran ONE and carry out their research activities in the western Mediterranean Sea. This opportunity is designed for university students who intend to do a dissertation, a bachelor's/master's thesis on the data collected during the M.A.R.E. project 2024 or researchers who intend to produce a scientific publication.

Call for abstracts for IMBeR IMBIZO7

The Integrated Marine Biosphere Research (IMBeR) will hold its seventh IMBIZO (the Zulu word for 'a gathering') at the Institut Agronomique et Vétérinaire Hassan II (IAV) in Rabat, Morocco from 23-26 September 2024. IMBeR aims to promote and enable transdisciplinary marine research towards ocean sustainability and its governance. Topics addressed during IMBIZO7 will showcase current and emerging research, and explore potential solutions towards sustainable ocean governance by 2030 - the target of multiple global sustainability initiatives.

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), a Centre of Excellence in Marine and Maritime Research, Innovation and Technology Development, established in Larnaca, Cyprus since 2019, is interested in establishing an EU-funded ERA Chair with a prospective ERA Chair holder (M/F) who should be an outstanding researcher and/or innovator in a chosen scientific domain relevant to CMMI' activities. The scientific field can be any domain of marine or maritime research and innovation, including but not limited to marine technology, marine sciences and marine social sciences. ERA Chair holders can be citizens of any country in the world.
