Re: Polar outreach activities during Edinburgh International Science Festival

Good Morning Sian,

I'm keen to help however have an interview Tuesday 10th and I realized yesterday that I have something on Sunday Morning that I can't rearrange but if you don't get other volunteers I can come up Sunday afternoon to  Edinburgh and leave Monday evening. Short turn around and interview hence flying.

I'm near Gatwick otherwise National express late or overnight. Accommodation, a youth hostel will do Sunday and/or Monday.

My outreach experience includes one or two years ago a children's Polar outreach event in Leeds. I helped set up and pack down and explained thermal expansion using someone's clever experiment of coloured dies in thin tubes put in cold and hot water. We also looked at melting ice in water.

I've also attended Polar conferences in Norway. Including 'Ocean Acidification, Bergen, 2013' and volunteered at Arctic Frontiers, Tromso in 2014 and 2016. I also produced and presented two posters. One on 'Search and Rescue in the Arctic' and 'Pollution from Shipping in the Arctic'.

Most recently I've been to BAS where I network and brainstorm with UK and Russian Young Scientists in Collaboration of our research.

For my MSc in Environmental Pollution and Protection at Lancaster I did a data research project on 'The behaviour of Organochlorine Pesticides in the Arctic'. My BSc from Reading was 'Rural Environmental Science'.

I currently work as a bacteriologist looking at Salmonella in farming. I aspire to get into Environmental Pollution research, particularly environmental fate and toxicology.  I have an interview next week for job as Hydrological Officer with the Environment Agency.

If you don't get any other offers, let me know. I expect flights /to cost about £70 ish each way and a hostel about £30.

Kind Regards

Jennifer

Dear UKPN,

As a follow-up to my email about volunteering at polar science outreach events as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival (email below), I have more great news: there is funding available from the UKPN to cover your travel and accommodation costs!

If you would like to be part of these exciting events and get financial support from UKPN, all you have to do is email me with an estimate of your costs and a brief sentence or two about your research background and any outreach experience you have.

Best wishes, and I look forward to seeing you next weekend!
Sian

Dear UKPN,

Lorna Street and I are co-ordinating a two-day event at Our Dynamic Earth as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival focusing on polar science and living and working in the polar regions.

The event will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 8th and Monday 9th April. This will involve, amongst other things, displays and hands-on activities focusing on ocean acidification, terrestrial carbon fluxes, glacier and ice sheet flows, polar animals, and animals' insulation.

We are looking for volunteers to come and engage with the public, and show them the wonders of polar science and life. If you would like to take part, all you have to do is send me an email! You are very welcome to help out on one of the days or both. Please tell me your preference and I will draw up a rota that accommodates everyone.

Please pass this on to anyone else you think may be interested. If you are interested in bringing your own displays/exhibits/shiny science kit to add to the party, please feel free and we will work it into the program.

Looking forward to working with you and bringing our exciting science to the public!

Best wishes, Sian
