New UK Polar Research Vessel: Public Consultation on Scientific Requirements

Hi UKPN,

As some of you are aware, the UK has approved funding of more than £200 million towards a new UK Polar Research Vessel, scheduled to be completed and in operation for Autumn 2019. It will fulfill the roles of the two current UK Polar Research Vessels (RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton). As the completion/operation date is not for another 5 years, our input as early-career scientists is especially important, as  we will be the scientists that will potentially benefit most from this additional vessel.

Consultation on the science requirements for the new UK polar research vessel is now open. Further information, the science case, latest concept design and instructions on how to submit comments can be found on the NERC website: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/about/whatwedo/engage/consultations/nprv/

Comments on the concept design and science capability and capacity requirements should also be sent to the consultation e-mail address (nprvscience@nerc.ac.uk).

The deadline for comments is 31 January 2015.

Cheers

TJ
