Free UKPN Workshop: Modelling in the Polar Sciences, University of Sheffield, UK

Dear UKPN members,

We would like to advertise the following free workshop organised by the UK polarnetwork (UKPN) for early-career scientists:

Modelling in the Polar Sciences

Department of Geography, University of Sheffield

2nd – 4th April 2012

Confirmed speakers:

Andrew Fowler, Edward Hanna, Richard Hindmarsh, Richard Hodgkins, Felix Ng & Ian Rutt.

This spring, the UKPN will continue our highly successful programme of workshops bringing early-career polar scientists together to meet and learn about specific areas of the discipline.

This free workshop is aimed at early career polar scientists (Masters, Ph.D. and Post-docs) who are interested in finding out about and developing skills in numerical modelling. The workshop does not presume a huge amount of prior modelling experience or advanced mathematical knowledge and is aimed at all abilities and interests. The workshop will include:

  •  Introductory sessions and discussions covering the different styles of modelling and how they are used in the polar sciences.
  • Research seminars by an amazing line-up of respected academics, including: Andrew Fowler, Limerick; Edward Hanna, Sheffield; Richard Hindmarsh, British Antarctic Survey; Richard Hodgkins, Loughborough; Felix Ng, Sheffield and Ian Rutt, Swansea on subjects ranging from modelling ice divides to ice ages!
  • Practical computer sessions based around the subjects covered in the seminars to give participants hands on experience of numerical modelling under the supervision of experienced researchers.
  • Poster sessions for participants to present their work - modelling-based or otherwise!

There will also be a workshop dinner on the second night, which will give everyone the chance to properly meet each other and enjoy an evening out in Sheffield!  This will be at a local Sheffield restaurant and there is a place in the registration form for you to confirm that you would like to come to the dinner and tell us about any special dietary requirements.

To register please fill out our registration form with your details and the title and abstract of your poster by following the link below.

The deadline for registration is Friday the 2nd of March 2012. There will be a limited number of spaces available so in the event of oversubscription, decisions will be made by Friday the 9th of March 2012.

The workshop is free, however we are unable to offer funding for travel, accommodation or the dinner. We will be offering limited, but free, accommodation on Ph.D. student's floors. Please indicate on the registration form if you would like this. Otherwise we will be sending out a list of recommended local accommodation to participants.

It will be great to welcome a broad range of Polar Scientists to Sheffield in April!

Please contact us if you have any questions about the workshop.

Thanks,
