Happy New Year!

 

We are kicking off 2026 with an exciting Polar Beers x PubSci collaboration: Antarctica 2.0: The Heat is On!

 

As many may know, Polar Beers is the UKPN’s pub-based science outreach event, bringing polar scientists and members of the public together over a pint. PubSci is a monthly science communication event in London that presents accessible science talks in a similar pub setting.

 Two talks by Mike Lucibella and Dr. Lavenia Ratnarajah followed by a pub quiz with prizes!!

 

Although this is a free event, tickets are required with an optional donation to PubSci. Please reserve your spot HERE where you can also find more information about the event and the speakers.

Deadlines are fast approaching for the next batch of RGS-IBG grants, including the following awards:

• Gino Watkins Fund Awards                                                                                                   31 January

Up to £4,000 towards expeditions that aim to improve knowledge of the polar regions

• Monica Cole Research Grant                                                                                              3 February

£1,000 for a UK-based physical geography undergraduate or Masters student undertaking original fieldwork overseas

• Henrietta Hutton Research Grant                                                                                    3 February

£500 for UK-based undergraduate or Masters students undertaking overseas field research as an individual or as part of a team

• Frederick Soddy Postgraduate Award                                                                            3 February

Up to £6,000 to support UK-based PhD students carrying out research on 'the study of the social, economic and cultural life of a region'

• RGS-IBG Small Research Grants                                                                                      3 February

Up to £3,500 for UK-based early career researchers conducting original desk or field-based research in any area of geography

• RGS Explore Grants                                                                                                              15 February

Up to £5,000 to support UK-led teams undertaking overseas expeditions and research, including student teams

• Innovative Geography Teaching Grants                                                                   15 February

£1,000 for teacher-higher education teams for the creation of teaching materials

Happy new year! Hoping you had ample time to rest and recharge this holiday season. 

I wanted to pass along this call for abstracts for a session I am co-hosting in the Faroes in May. Please feel free to share and also to connect me to anyone who might be particularly interested! We've had slower uptake that normal and I'd really love to feature early career researchers, too. 

Call deadline is Jan 15.
