Quality and Peer Review

Friday 2nd December 2022,14:30 - 17:00

Location: Glasgow Caledonian University

Application deadline:  7th November 2022, 17:00

Overview:

Sense about Science is running a 'Quality and Peer Review' workshop on Friday 2nd December 2022 hosted at Glasgow Caledonian University. This half-day workshop will run from 14:30 - 17:00 and is free to attend.

Suitable for:

STEM and social sciences early career researchers (PhD students, post-docs or equivalent in your first job) and clinical trainees/professionals in your first job. There will be opportunities to put your questions to experienced reviewers, journal editors and publishers.

Session content:

The workshop will explore how peer review works, how to get involved, the challenges to the system, and the role of peer review in helping the public to evaluate research claims.   Should peer review detect plagiarism, bias and fraud? What does peer review do for science and what does the scientific community want it to do for them? Should reviewers remain anonymous? Does it illuminate good ideas or shut them down?

Eleanor Papas-Rose, Editorial Operations Manager and Peer Review Manager for F1000 Research and associated publishing platforms is confirmed for the workshop.

Panellist recommendations for the following roles are welcomed:

  • Academic editor: Presentation on their role as an editor. What happens inside the black box of peer review? How do they select reviewers and make decisions on papers? How do they address bias and conflicts of interest?
  • Scientist peer reviewer: Presentation on their experiences of being a reviewer and having their papers reviewed. What did the process involve? What motivates them to review? What makes a good peer review?
  • ECR peer reviewer: how did they get started, what barriers did they face and how did they overcome them?

How to apply:

Apply here to get your free place by Monday 7th November 2022, 17:00.
