Race Impact Survey & Dr Karen Salt on a journey through UK science - tomorrow!

Dear Colleagues,

We have two opportunities of interest today.

1.       A talk by Dr Karen Salt, tomorrow Wednesday 7th October, 11am. ‘A journey through UK science as a researcher and lead investigator’, arranged by the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative during Black History Month. See attached flyer.

2.       A Race Impact Survey, see below.

Thanks,

Holly

We are writing to invite you to complete a survey about your experience of equality, diversity and inclusion while working in the UK Polar research and operations community, particularly regarding race. Whether you have worked in the UK polar community for a long time or are only getting started, your experience is valuable.

We are undertaking this survey, through the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative (DiPSI), to gather key insights into racism and lack of inclusivity, and to move the response to racism forward in the UK Polar Community. DiPSI has highlighted the lack of diversity for minority ethnic groups in UK polar science in comparison to the wider UK population as an issue, and looks to consider the opportunities to improve from only 3% representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues.

We are asking for people in the community to share their experience and thoughts, so we can collate best practice responses and consider the next stage of development of the DiPSI programme. We will collate the results and publish them on the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative webpage, along with next steps.

This survey is for those who are currently working or have worked within the UK Polar Community, and should take ca 10 minutes to complete. Please forward it to colleagues and friends who also work and study in polar fields in the UK, or have done so in the past. The survey will close on 25 October 2020.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

On behalf of the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative,

Beatrix Schlarb-Ridley

Deputy Chair, DiPSI Steering Group
