3-year Postdoc – Arctic soil biogeochemical modelling

3-year Postdoc – Arctic soil biogeochemical modelling
Queen Mary University of London, UK

The Earth Surface Science group at Queen Mary University of London are seeking a 36-month postdoc with expertise in terrestrial biogeochemical modelling. This post is part of an exciting new collaborative project with CU Boulder, U Utah, Montana Tech & British Geological Survey, investigating the fate of Arctic soil following glacier retreat.

Glacier retreat is exposing pioneer Arctic soils that host a dynamic ecosystem and act as biogeochemical reactors. The aim of this project is to improve the understanding of how seasonal processes contribute to the long-term (i.e. multi-decadal) development of Arctic soils. The PDRA will develop, implement and apply a new fully coupled biogeochemical-geophysical model for pioneer Arctic soils. These activities are linked to a larger project whose wider ambition is to achieve continuous year-round monitoring of dynamic processes using a network of buried geophysical sensors in a High-Arctic glacier forefield, and repeated field monitoring of soil biogeochemical processes via state-of-the-art molecular techniques.

Numerical modelling will be instrumental in forming mechanistic linkages between seasonal variations, and soil biogeochemical, geophysical and hydrogeological processes over multi-decadal timescales, as well as to capture and explore year-round dynamics of Arctic soils, and conduct predictive modelling of the future fate of Arctic soils following large-scale ice retreat and climate warming. Model development and calibration will make use of field datasets that will be collected during year-round fieldwork campaigns throughout 2020 and 2021, There will be opportunities for the PDRA to participate in project-related fieldwork activities in Svalbard.

The PDRA will work within a multidisciplinary team with significant strengths in environmental-biogeochemistry, modelling, geomicrobiology, and geophysical sensing – and thus develop an interdisciplinary skill set, and collaborate nationally and internationally.

This is a full time, fixed-term appointment for 36 months, starting on 1st May 2020 or as soon as possible after that date. The starting salary is £36,098 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance. The benefits package includes 30 days annual leave, pension scheme and an interest free season ticket loan.

Candidate specifications:
Applicants must have a PhD (by the time of appointment) or equivalent in a relevant natural science or engineering field, and have a track record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications in international journals. We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate skills and experience in numerical/reactive-transport modeling and biogeochemistry, with proven ability to work independently and take the initiative. The position is open to international candidates.

How to apply:

What have you been up to recently? British Science Festival Call for Expressions of Interest

Hi All,

As your festival coordinators we have been hard at work coming up with a good range of events to attend in the next few months. The British Science Festival is taking place in Chelmsford this September and they put on a range of activities and events for non-academic audiences mostly age 16+

We would like to submit two applications:
1. Drop-in sessions which would be similar to stalls at other events where we may have a hands on activity or two and information available via posters and volunteers (you guys).

2. A Panel which would involve four UKPN members as panellists and a chair. We would run it on one of the days and would focus on a specific polar theme.

In order to submit the application we need a suitable amount of information from those of you who may be interested in being involved. Especially for the panel, we would need to know what you've all been up to so that we can form a theme and give you an opportunity to share your exciting work!

Please fill in this survey if any of that sounds like it might be of interest: https://forms.gle/NCvmDjgigXwryxkf8

The festival dates are: 8/09 to 12/09 2020
UKPN would fund travel to and from the festival as well as accommodation if necessary.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to email us at: chloe.scott@polarnetwork.org or chloe.nunn@polarnetwork.org

Thanks in advance for your interest!

Kind regards,

Chloe and Chloe

PhD in Antarctic Seismology - University of Leeds

Good afternoon UKPN,

If you’re an aspiring glacier-seismologist, or teach an aspiring glacier-seismologist, read on!

I’m advertising a PhD project here in Leeds’ School of Earth and Environment, looking at measuring and modelling seismic anisotropy in Antarctic ice masses.  This is part of the TIME project, itself part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration, and comes with an Antarctic field deployment in 2021-22. Full details are here: https://panorama-dtp.ac.uk/research/fractures-and-fabrics-in-glacier-ice-sensitivity-of-seismic-anisotropy-for-antarctic-ice-masses/

The details in the link will mention a closing date in January but, don’t worry, applications are open for another few weeks!  There are some limited NERC-related eligibility criteria to note, however, specifically that only UK students can receive the full funding (or, EU students who’ve been UK residents for 3+ years), and the project has to start before August.

Interested?  Give me a shout – I’d love to chat to you.

Best regards,

Adam

Edinburgh Festival Volunteering Opportunity

Dear All,

UKPN will be collaborating to run the Dynamic Earth area at the Edinburgh Festival this April 18th and 19th. Along with providing some hands on activities, we will also be providing some man power so that members of the public (ages 4+) can get answers to their pressing questions about the poles and our climate.

We are looking for about 3 members to join us so if you would be interested in volunteering your time and expertise for a weekend at the Festival then please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/ctbVRomPizJ5T3k37

If you have any fun and unique hands on activities, regardless of your availability to volunteer in person, and would be willing to share the equipment required then please also get in touch. The form has space for this, or just reply to this email.

Thank you,

Chloe and Chloe, your Festival Coordinators

Outreach at the National Maritime Museum

Hi all,

The National Maritime Museum are theming their Easter holiday activities this year around Antarctica. They will be doing a bit of art, history and science across the holiday (4th April – 19th April 2020), and want the families visiting the museum to meet and talk to scientists who are actively researching and/or visiting the Antarctic. It will be an easy and fun bit of science outreach for any Antarctic researchers!

If there is a date or two you would like to be involved, please contact me. Weekdays are preferred over weekends, and exclusive of 10th-13th April.

Thanks,

Holly
