Department of Geography, University of Sheffield
25th-26th March 2015
The organisers of the RGS-IBG Postgraduate Forum Mid-Term Conference, at the
Department of Geography, The University of Sheffield invite submissions for paper and
poster presentations at the annual conference in March 2015.
The Postgraduate Mid-Term is a fantastic opportunity for all postgraduate students to
present their current work and research to their peers, in a friendly and supportive
environment. We invite postgraduate researchers from all areas of geography, both physical
and human, and at any stage of their research, to present to the postgraduate community,
facilitating a friendly and much welcomed interdisciplinary networking event.
We are delighted to welcome as keynote speakers for this conference, Dr Andrew
McGonigle, University of Sheffield, and Dr Paul Simpson, Plymouth University.
Dr Andrew McGonigle
Dr Andrew McGonigle is a Reader in Volcanic Remote Sensing at The University of Sheffield.
His research is focused on the development and application of remote sensing techniques
for environmental, particularly volcanic, remote sensing. More specifically Dr McGonigle's
work is developing sensors to monitor volcanic plumes in order to further our
understanding of how volcanoes work. This has included measuring passive gas release from
Mt. Etna and Vulcano, amongst other locations.

Dr Paul Simpson
Dr Paul Simpson is a Lecturer in Human Geography at Plymouth University, whose research
focuses on the social and cultural geographies of artistic and everyday practices and the use
of urban public spaces. Engaging with the work of Henri Lefebvre, Gilles Deleuze, and JeanLuc Nancy, amongst others, Dr Simpson draws on ethnographic and visual methods,
developing understandings of the experiential aspects of this use of space, and how it
intersects with its layout and design. Dr Simpson is currently working on three main projects
related to these interests, which focus on the 'perception of cycling environments', 'sensory
enigmas of contemporary urban mobilities', and 'the spatialities of the subject'.

We particularly welcome first year PhD students, for whom the conference is a good chance
to present for the first time.
The conference will take place at The University of Sheffield's Department of Geography,
over two days on 25th and 26th March 2015.
