Speaker suggestions for UKASC IPY workshop

Dear UKPN members,

 

UKPN will be running a pre-conference workshop on the International Polar Year (IPY) on the morning of the first day (September 9^th) of the UK Arctic Science Conference at Northumbria (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/news-events/events/2025/09/uk-arctic-science-conference-2025/).

 

This workshop will share with attendees what IPY is, how it is structured nationally and internationally, current known activities, and a discussion on the last IPY. The intention is to introduce what IPY is and why it is important for ECRs to engage.

 

As a part of the workshop, we will have a panel discussion with speakers who were a part of the last IPY to discuss how the previous IPY functioned and positive outcomes/lessons learnt. We are currently looking for suggestions for speakers for this panel. If you have suggestions of potential speakers who have been a part of the last IPY, or you yourself were a part of the last IPY and would like to be on the panel, please reach out to : ipy@polarnetwork.org

UKPN Seminar Series: Antarctic snow algae - physiology and diversity (with a focus on Robert Island, South Shetland Island)

Dr Matthew Davey is an Associate Professor of Physiological Ecology currently at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).

Much of his research is understanding where and how microscopic algae can bloom on the surface snows of Antarctica. These blooms, being at the bottom of the food chain, are an important feature of Antarctica. In his seminar, Dr Davey will explain the Antarctic photosynthetic ecosystem, its physiology and how over the years we have mapped these using a mixture of satellite images and fieldwork, including the recent terrestrial research expedition to Robert Island (South Shetland Islands) supported by the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Now we know where these species live in Antarctica we can start to work out which ones will be at risk of disappearing as global temperature rises, and where the remaining blooms might move to where the snow habitat is still suitable. He will also explain the research his group is doing at SAMS on the samples brought back from Antarctica to understand how the cells can function in extreme habitats.

Help shape your polar research career by providing input on polar early career priorities for the next International Polar Year!

 

The 5th International Polar Year (IPY) 2032-2033 and its legacy will impact the careers of the current polar early career community, yet mid- and senior-career researchers often shape IPY priorities. Today's polar early career researchers (ECRs) have an unprecedented opportunity to provide input on what they want priorities to be for the 5th IPY. 

 

The Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) and the Polar Early Career Community Office (PSECCO) partnered to bring together 120 polar ECRs for the Polar Early Career World Summit (PECWS; held 22–24 March 2025) to develop 12 vision statements and 75 priorities for the polar community for the years to come. In order to have PECWS visions and priorities reflect the global polar ECR community, we ask polar ECRs who did not attend PECWS to provide written feedback on polar early career priorities via this priority input form. 

 

This input will be used to guide international priority setting and coordination processes in polar research, including through the 4th International Conference on Arctic Research Planning (ICARP IV) and the 5th IPY processes.

 

In the form, you can comment on the existing visions and priorities and identify missing ideas. We welcome form submissions from all polar early career community members, and encourage you to contribute to the form even if you only want to comment on one or two priority themes. 

 

Help make sure the global polar ECR community is fully represented. Fill out the priority input form by 23:59 GMT on 11 June.

As Editor-in-Chief, I am in the process of soliciting articles and in particular drawing together a thematic collection on microorganisms and climate change. IPA-IAL 2025 - Resilience and recovery in lake systems across time and space session

Dear Colleagues,

 

As the IAL/IPA 2025 abstract submission deadline draws near, May 30th 2025, we invite you to submit an abstract to our session: Resilience and recovery in lake systems across time and space. The session aims to explore natural resilience and ‘recovery after management’ stories of lakes from any disturbance event, with research on anthropogenic disturbances especially welcome. Through this session, we hope to better understand lake management and conservation challenges by sharing the emerging evidence.

 

The event will take place in Aix les Bains, France between 6^th-10^th October 2025. More information about the conference can be found on their website.

Resilience and recovery in lake systems across time and space

Lake ecosystems provide many key services, including food and water security, biodiversity, and carbon storage. These systems are highly susceptible to anthropogenic and natural drivers of stress, such as pollution, over-extraction, and climate change. A range of metrics and studies demonstrate lake ecosystems as one of the most vulnerable ecosystems globally. Recent studies have further indicated many lake ecosystems are approaching, or have passed, thresholds to unhealthy states, creating urgency for the development of well-informed management or restoration plans. Recovery from degraded states is often impeded by hysteresis and the influence of multiple stressors. Pathways to recovery remain largely unknown. Furthermore, there are limited systematic solutions for lake recovery reaching a structurally resilient state, hence, new research in this field could benefit freshwater health and ecosystem management. Here, we invite presentations analysing lake ecosystem resilience and recovery pathways.

The elections for the 2025-2026 APECS Executive Committee will be held during May and June 2025 for the term from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026. Apply now for the APECS Executive Committee (application deadline: 1 June, 23:59 GMT) to help shape our organization and influence the future of polar research!

The APECS Executive Committee consists of five members, who are electedby the APECS Council to manage the day-to-day decisions of the organization. You can find information about the APECS Executive Committee on the APECS website. This includes some general information, the list of current ExCommembers, as well as summaries of their meetings.

2025 Elections timeline:

• 1 June at 23:59 GMT: Application deadline
• 2 June - 19 June: Review period within the APECS Council including Q&A with ExCom applicants
• 20 June - 3 July at 23:59 GMT: Voting period within the APECS Council
• 7 July: Announcement of the 2024-2025 APECS Executive Committee
• 1 August - 30 September: Transition process

The Executive Committee is a rewarding, high-paced and work intensive committee; its members must be willing and able to contribute actively throughout the term on an almost daily basis via emails (except during e.g. field work, exam periods, holidays) and attend the online ExCom meetings (~2 hours) every two weeks. To apply, you have to be an APECS member with prior experience in the APECS leadership from the Executive Committee, Council or National Committee leaderships or an equivalent other organization.

Invitation to Sign the Central Arctic Ocean Science Letter

Dear UKPN Members, 

We would like to invite the UK community of scientists to consider signing a joint letter calling for strengthened Central Arctic Ocean governance, building upon the Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement. The letter is led by the Arctic science community, open to any scientist, and delivered by the Ocean Conservancy and Oceans North.

Please note, this letter should be signed by scientists. The authors of the letter define scientists as anyone who has the expertise and knowledge to engage in and voice support for the letter's content. There are a number of other letter formats which can be signed by governments and their agencies, non-governmental organisations, and the general public/citizen letter.
