We are excited to invite you to a webinar with the Open Ocean Project of the Association Maritime Heritage. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the Project's activities and discover their scientific work carried out in the far-flung corners of the Russian Arctic: the coastal areas and remote islands in the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea and the Laptev Sea.  Topics include: Arctic biodiversity monitoring (plants, invertebrates, seabirds, marine mammals); mapping of coastal habitats; plastic debris survey; historical and memorial sites and monuments documentation and surveys; discovery of UK polar explorer Benjamin Leigh-Smith's Eira shipwreck.

The North American Arctic addresses the emergence of a new security relationship within the North American North. It focuses on current and emerging security issues that confront the North American Arctic and that shape relationships between and with neighbouring states (Alaska in the US; Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut in Canada; Greenland and Russia).

Identifying the degree to which 'domain awareness' has redefined the traditional military focus, while a new human rights discourse undercuts traditional ways of managing sovereignty and territory, the volume's contributors question normative security arrangements. Although security itself is not an obsolete concept, our understanding of what constitutes real human-centred security has become outdated. The contributors argue that there are new regionally specific threats originating from a wide range of events and possibilities, and very different subjectivities that can be brought to understand the shape of Arctic security and security relationships in the twenty-first century.

The North American Arctic provides a framework or lens through which many new developments are assessed in order to understand their impact on a changing circumpolar region at different scales – from the level of community to the broader national and regional scale.

Title: Current agenda of the Russian Arctic development

Join us in our first seminar of the Spring 2021 Online Seminar series, dedicated to UK-Russia research cooperation, this coming Wednesday 3 March, to listen to a seminar led by Dr Marina Kalinina, Adviser to the Rector, Northern Arctic Federal University (NArFU), Arkhangelsk and Vice-President on Interregional Cooperation at the University of the Arctic.

The seminar, entitled "Current agenda of the Russian Arctic development", will consist of 4 short presentations (followed by questions) aiming to introduce both the breadth of activities that NArFU is involved with to foster international research and educational cooperation in the Russian Arctic, as well as ongoing research activities by NArFU research teams. The four speakers and topics will be:

• Role of international cooperation in education and research in the Arctic (Dr Marina Kalinina)
• Biomonitoring in the Russian Arctic (Dr Tatiana Sorokina)
• Energy in the Russian Arctic (Dr Pavel Maryandyshev)

BOGS 2021 - Registration OPEN

We are delighted to invite you to the British Organic Geochemical Society (BOGS) conference, hosted by the University of Birmingham on the 21-22 July 2021. In light of the continuing COVID-19 situation, the organising committee have decided to deliver BOGS 2021 in a virtual format to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all conference participants.

The conference will involve two half-days of online presentations, flash talks, a keynote presentation by Prof. Erin McClymont (Durham University), social break-out sessions, prize-giving and an evening quiz. Registration is £15 for Post-PhD/Industry, £10 for PhD students, and is FREE for MSc and undergraduate students, and for individuals without funding. We believe this represents great value, and we would be grateful if supervisors could forward this opportunity to students who are keen to experience presenting their work in a friendly and supportive environment, or who are interested in organic geochemistry.

Who this conference is for: We invite polar and alpine researchers from around the world and from various academic levels to present stories related to the polar and alpine regions that happened in 2020. We hope to hear both success stories and stories of learning from failure. The ultimate goal of the project is to unite the ECR community in a collegial and learning experience organized under the 7th annual APECS Online Conference.

 

This conference has been organised with the support of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) https://www.apecs.is/ 

 

Summary

The theme is designed to encourage contributions from those whose research has been impacted by Covid-19 and had to develop new directions with their research. It also acknowledges that some were able to carry out fieldwork, and so also gives a space for them to showcase their research. The conference will be an opportunity for new research to be presented and connections to be made across polar research. After what has been a difficult year for everyone around the world, we would like to celebrate and learn from your stories related to the polar and alpine regions that happened in 2020. We hope to hear both success stories and stories of learning from failure. The ultimate goal of the project is to unite the ECR community in a collegial and learning experience organized under the 7th annual APECS Online Conference.

 

Submissions

The form for submitting an abstract for a talk or a poster is available via the APECS website on the link below. Abstracts must be < 300 words and the submission deadline is Wednesday, 31st March 2021.

REMINDER: UK Antarctic Science Conference 2021- 22nd-25th March

Dear All,

A quick reminder that abstract submission for the UK Antarctic Science Conference 2020/21 is now open!

 

We are pleased to announce a virtual hosting of the 2020 meeting that had been scheduled to take place in September 2020 at the University of Edinburgh.

 

We welcome contributions from ALL areas of Antarctic and Antarctic-related research, and contributions are not limited to UK researchers!

 

The meeting will take place from Monday 22 – Thursday 25 March, 13:00-17:00 GMT each afternoon. We anticipate sessions of 3-4x 15-minute talks interspersed with regular breakout sessions to get everyone mixing. We will also host a virtual poster session or two in cyberspace.

 

As part of the meeting, we will also host a scoping session for future Antarctic science priorities hosted by the UK National Committee for Antarctic Research, and there will be some activities organised through the UK Polar Network. These will hopefully include an informal panel event where ECRs have the opportunity to socialise with and get career advice from experienced Antarctic researchers, as well as some short talks/workshops. There will also be a prize draw for the opportunity to win some great merchandise for those who attend the UKPN's scheduled events!

 

Please take note of the deadlines for abstract submission (Friday 5 March, 3 weeks from today) and registration (Monday 15 March). Registration is free, but for setting up a secure list for the meeting you MUST register by the deadline.
