UKPN Seminar Series 2026-27 - we need you!

Dear UKPN members,

The UKPN is looking for speakers to contribute to our upcoming seminar series for 2026-27. We are inviting you to fill out the Google Form below as an expression of interest.

https://forms.gle/odADAPdqHFBLY3CTA

A seminar talk is generally one hour long, and delivered virtually. Talks can be on any topic relevant to the polar science community, and interdisciplinary subjects are particularly welcome. For inspiration, our YouTube channel has recordings of some previous talks: https://www.youtube.com/@UKPolarNetwork.

Any talks which align with previous training topics would be well received - for example: peer-review, leadership, stakeholder engagement, co-design with indigenous communities, grant proposal writing, science leadership, engaging with policy makers, research data management, outreach... The list goes on! We would definitely encourage you to be creative about what you can offer to ECRs - if you aren't sure whether something would be suitable, please do ask and we can discuss it together.

If you have any further questions, please email info@polarnetwork.org and we will be happy to provide more information.

Kind regards,
Ellie Fisher
Training Officer

Antarctic Flags - extra help needed!

Hi everyone,

I run the UKPN Antarctic Flags project on behalf of the UK Polar Network.

We have almost wrapped up the project for this year, but we have a handful of flags that were missed or unable to be photographed due to changing fieldwork commitments. Is anyone in this mailing list currently in Antarctica or about to head south? If you would be able to help photograph some student artwork for us, I would really appreciate it. More about the project here: https://polarnetwork.org/education-and-outreach/antarctic-flags/

Please do get in touch if you think you can help in the next month or so.

Many thanks

Fiona

Read Our Report: PolarSTEP 2025

Hello all,

The UK Polar Network recently published the PolarSTEP (Polar Skills Training for Early Career Researchers and Professionals) 2025 Report celebrating the success of the course which took place in November 2025.

A summary can be found in this blog: https://polarnetwork.org/2026/02/polarstep-report/

Please share it with others in your network and let everyone know why training courses like these are crucial for boosting early career confidence and increasing equity in polar science.

Personally, it was a delight to co-lead this course and a privilege to get to know the participants. I also learnt a great deal myself from fellow instructors, and the participants, through delivery of sessions and supporting logistics. Please take a look at the report for further reflections and participant testimonials too!

Finally, if you know of organisations who are financially healthy and might be interested in funding the next iteration of this course, please point them to training@polarnetwork.org

Kind regards,
Chloe, on behalf of the PolarSTEP 2025 team

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to invite you to a workshop on May 12th, 1200-1700, at Newcastle University, entitled 'Future of the Arctic'.

Most importantly: the workshop is free to attend, and we are providing lunch.

This workshop will feature exciting speakers from a range of backgrounds covering the future research priorities for the Arctic across the cryospheric, climatic and oceanic realms, science for policy, the changing geopolitical environment of the Arctic, and progress and best practice in the decolonisation of Arctic science, history and exploration.
We will offer opportunities for networking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and expert insights into future research priorities across the Arctic.
More details are in the attached document.

If you would like to attend, please sign up on the registration form by 23rd March

Places are limited to 50, on a first-come, first-serve basis. We will operate a wait-list if demand is high - so please sign up soon.

UKPN Outreach Opportunities

Dear all UKPN members,

As some of you might be aware, we're currently in British Science Week (6th - 15th March 2026). This annual ten-day celebration has a strong focus on schools and education. It's a particularly important time of year for those of us who aim to strengthen public engagement with science, and is also a reminder of how meaningful Education and Outreach can be!

We are excited to share some opportunities here at UKPN for those of you feeling inspired to carry on the impact of British Science Week throughout the rest of the year. We are in the process of building up the UKPN's Education and Outreach Network and are looking for enthusiastic UKPN members who would like to get involved in any future outreach events, helping us to deliver educational initiatives and inspire the next generation.

The types of opportunities we currently offer are:

School visits - attend schools that reach out for a polar scientist and give a short presentation and discussion with children of all ages and abilities. Resources and support can be provided by the UKPN Education and Outreach officers and is a great opportunity to develop scientific communication skills and public speaking.

Festivals - represent the UKPN at science festivals and events around the country, running fun, interactive activities for families and children, supported by our dedicated festivals team. Get crafty, try on polar gear, or bring something related to your own work!

Polar Pen Pals - this initiative is designed to connect scientists and support workers with polar experience to school children learning about polar science. Questions are often on fieldwork, life in extreme environments and polar science in general. This is a great opportunity to develop written communication and support outreach experience without the need to travel to schools in-person.

If you are interested in participating in future events, please sign up using the google form below so we will keep you updated with opportunities in your area. We are also able to support reasonable travel expenses for any events in which you represent the UKPN.

Register your interest: https://forms.gle/wrKumhnEoviFDitF9

Thank you for your support!

online webinar: march 11th - Planning Safe and Effective Field Campaigns=?utf-8?Q?=E2=80=9D_?=online panel

Hi,

See below webinar that might be of interest

Cheers

Anna

Square graphic with the PSECCO and NSF logos at the top above white text that reads planning safe and effective field campaigns and join NSF ice shelf rumpling and PSECCO on march 11 2026 from 12pm to 130pm MT with a faint silhouette of a bird in the lower left corner

Attend the "Planning Safe and Effective Field Campaigns" online panel

March 11, 2026 at 2.00pm to 3.30pm ET | 12.00pm to 1.30pm MT | 10.00am to 11:30am AKT

Planning a polar field season can feel exhilarating — and overwhelming. Join PSECCO and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Ice-Shelf Rumpling Project for a 1.5‑hour panel designed specifically for early‑career researchers preparing for fieldwork in the Arctic or Antarctic.

This conversation brings together experienced field scientists to dig into what actually makes a field campaign run smoothly. Panelists will discuss essential pre‑field training, how to build clear communication structures within your team, and strategies for responding when plans inevitably shift in extreme environments or unforeseen challenges arise.

Participants will walk away with practical tools for preparing before deployment, guidance for navigating challenges in the field, and resources you can use to strengthen your next field campaign — whether it's your first or your fifteenth.
