Call for abstracts for the APECS International Online Conference 2021 #APECS

Conference theme: Polar Science: Success Stories from the Field and from Home

Conference date: Wednesday, 12th May 2021

Contact: info@apecs.is

Location: Online

Abstract deadline: Wednesday, 31st March 2021

Who this conference is for: We invite polar and alpine researchers from around the world and from various academic levels to present stories related to the polar and alpine regions that happened in 2020. We hope to hear both success stories and stories of learning from failure. The ultimate goal of the project is to unite the ECR community in a collegial and learning experience organized under the 7th annual APECS Online Conference.

This conference has been organised with the support of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) https://www.apecs.is/

Summary

The theme is designed to encourage contributions from those whose research has been impacted by Covid-19 and had to develop new directions with their research. It also acknowledges that some were able to carry out fieldwork, and so also gives a space for them to showcase their research. The conference will be an opportunity for new research to be presented and connections to be made across polar research. After what has been a difficult year for everyone around the world, we would like to celebrate and learn from your stories related to the polar and alpine regions that happened in 2020. We hope to hear both success stories and stories of learning from failure. The ultimate goal of the project is to unite the ECR community in a collegial and learning experience organized under the 7th annual APECS Online Conference.

REMINDER: UK Antarctic Science Conference 2021- 22nd-25th March

Dear All,

A quick reminder that abstract submission for the UK Antarctic Science Conference 2020/21 is now open!

We are pleased to announce a virtual hosting of the 2020 meeting that had been scheduled to take place in September 2020 at the University of Edinburgh.

We welcome contributions from ALL areas of Antarctic and Antarctic-related research, and contributions are not limited to UK researchers!

The meeting will take place from Monday 22 – Thursday 25 March, 13:00-17:00 GMT each afternoon. We anticipate sessions of 3-4x 15-minute talks interspersed with regular breakout sessions to get everyone mixing. We will also host a virtual poster session or two in cyberspace.

As part of the meeting, we will also host a scoping session for future Antarctic science priorities hosted by the UK National Committee for Antarctic Research, and there will be some activities organised through the UK Polar Network. These will hopefully include an informal panel event where ECRs have the opportunity to socialise with and get career advice from experienced Antarctic researchers, as well as some short talks/workshops. There will also be a prize draw for the opportunity to win some great merchandise for those who attend the UKPN's scheduled events!

Please take note of the deadlines for abstract submission (Friday 5 March, 3 weeks from today) and registration (Monday 15 March). Registration is free, but for setting up a secure list for the meeting you MUST register by the deadline.

Registration and abstract submission are via the following link:

https://www.bas.ac.uk/event/uk-antarctic-science-conference-2021/

Full details on the web-based platforms to be used for the conference sessions and activities and the respective joining instructions will be circulated to all participants once registration has closed.

We very much look forward to seeing you in late March!

These discussions will inform a publicly available online report on the challenges and opportunities for Scotland in Arctic matters, as well as recommendations for improved coordination. The Scottish Government are supporting these events and the UArctic are following closely. It would be fantastic if your network members could attend to add to the discussion expertise and experience/potential for collaborating with Arctic partners over the coming weeks.

Virtual outreach opportunity with STEM hub

Hi UKPN members!

We have been contacted by the STEM hub (South East England branch) about the upcoming British Science week (March 8th). They would love to hear from some of our members in order to make some virtual content for their website that schools will use in the upcoming weeks!

It seems they would like to make some pre-recorded material, such as a presentation about your work, how you came to work in polar science or a Q&A session, with our members around the theme of innovation.

If you would be interested in taking part please get in touch with me and we can go forward from there. It sounds like a great opportunity to take part in some outreach and a chance to make some great online material that can have a huge impact during these virtual learning times!

Look forward to hearing from you 😊

Cheers
Robynne

UK-Russia Arctic Science Priorities Conference, 18-19 February 2021

If you haven't already, please register for the UK-Russia Arctic Science Priorities Conference https://forms.gle/w5fp7tcSe79cdgRV7 until 10 February.

UKPN and APECS Russia invite you take part in the UK-Russia Arctic Science Priorities Conference, held online on 18-19 February, 2021.

Within the past decade a number of research events with particular relevance to the Arctic region and its people have taken place in various formats such as scientific conferences, stakeholder meetings and policy making sessions. While these larger endeavours have the capacity to discuss international collaborations, it is often smaller workshops that are able to successfully facilitate and foster bilateral links between individuals from both nations.

This event aims to promote and foster science connections and collaborations among UK and Russian scientists through providing a platform for extensive open dialogue on common goals and  priorities to build a road map for future Arctic research. It is anticipated that the roadmap will provide a tool to aid in the development of successful collaborations. We invite the UK and Russian science community involved in the Arctic research to actively participate in the conference and workshop.

Please register at https://forms.gle/w5fp7tcSe79cdgRV7 until 10 February. Final program and notifications will be sent to the registered participants on 15 February.
