SOOS ECR Rep

Calling for a SOOS ECR Representative with interest in the Southern Ocean Indian Sector!

The Southern Ocean Indian Sector (SOIS) Regional Working Group (RWG) is calling all early career researchers with working knowledge of observational research in the Southern Ocean with a particular interest in the Indian Sector to apply for the position of APECS ECR representative. The successful applicant will attend RWG meetings and be responsible for assisting with data collection, curation, and reportage. The position will be for 2 years and non-salaried, but there will be travel reimbursement for attending one meeting if the working group holds a meeting during your term, and potential for co-authorship of publications. The ECR representative will be the key point of liaison with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS).

Call for applications: Early Career Research programme onboard R/V Skagerak to Greenland

Application deadline: 14^th May

The Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, the University of Gothenburg, the British Antarctic Survey and the NERC Arctic Office jointly invite early career researchers (ECRs) affiliated with universities and research centres in Greenland, Sweden, Iceland and the United Kingdom to apply for a ship-based training programme this summer.

The programme will be part of a nine-day science cruise to central-east Greenland, starting and ending in Reykjavik. The vessel will be the R/V Skagerak, operated by the University of Gothenburg. There are five berths available within the programme for early career researchers.

📖 Whether you're a scientist, station staff, community member, artist, guide, or someone who's spent time on the ice, we invite you to share a story, poem, haiku, or memory that brings the polar regions to life. We're especially interested in personal experiences that reflect the diversity of people connected to the poles.

UKPN Seminar Series: Antarctic snow algae - physiology and diversity (with a focus on Robert Island, South Shetland Island)

Dr Matthew Davey is an Associate Professor of Physiological Ecology currently at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).

Much of his research is understanding where and how microscopic algae can bloom on the surface snows of Antarctica. These blooms, being at the bottom of the food chain, are an important feature of Antarctica. In his seminar, Dr Davey will explain the Antarctic photosynthetic ecosystem, its physiology and how over the years we have mapped these using a mixture of satellite images and fieldwork, including the recent terrestrial research expedition to Robert Island (South Shetland Islands) supported by the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Now we know where these species live in Antarctica we can start to work out which ones will be at risk of disappearing as global temperature rises, and where the remaining blooms might move to where the snow habitat is still suitable. He will also explain the research his group is doing at SAMS on the samples brought back from Antarctica to understand how the cells can function in extreme habitats.

With less than a week to go, please join us for an online Peer Review Workshop by the UK Polar Network  and the US Association of Polar Early Career Scientists on May 7th (Wed) at 17:00 BST   This interactive workshop is aimed at Early Career Researchers to help navigate the daunting peer review process.   There will be a Plenary Talk by Terrestrial Ecologist Prof. Pete Convey, chief editor for 'Antarctic Science', 'Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution', board member of 'Ecology' and associate editor for 'Polar Science', 'Polish Polar Research', 'Ukrainian Antarctic Journal'.   It will be followed by a Panel discussion on peer review by the following early, mid and late career scientists: Oceanographer Dr. Sam Hartharn-Evans, Post-doctoral researcher at Northumbria University and UK Polar Network vice-president.
