Hello UKPN,

This is your final call to sign up to volunteer at the Cardiff and Aberdeen Science Festivals, so if you had it on the to do list, now is the time to tick that task off!

In February, we will be taking part in the Cardiff Science Festival (17th - 21st Feb 2023), and in late May/early June, we hope to host some workshops at the Aberdeen Science Festival "Techfest" (29th May - 4th June 2023).

We are looking for volunteers to help put on the events, including:
Setting up and running fun and engaging science-themed activities and experiments
Chatting with visitors and answering questions about polar science

These will be fantastic ways to engage with diverse audiences of families and young children and potentially inspire the next generation of polar scientists!

No experience needed - all we ask is your commitment and enthusiasm.

Cost for travel and accommodation expenses would be covered. For more information about each of the events, and to express interest please go to the following links:

Webinar: Antarctic Science Bursary: tips for potential applicants - 2023

Dear UKPN members

In coordination with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), Antarctic Science Ltd. is running a webinar to help potential applicants for the 2023 Antarctic Science International Bursary. This bursary runs every year and is for up to £6000 to support PhD or early career researchers to extend the scope of an existing research project. The 2023 bursary application is now open. More details regarding the bursary are here: http://www.antarcticsciencebursary.org.uk/.

The webinar will explain more about the bursary and advice on how to submit a successful application. Previous recipients of this bursary will share their experiences on the usefulness of this bursary in their research careers in Antarctic science. This will be followed by a Q+A session, where you can ask any bursary-related question to our panel of past award recipients and members of the Antarctic Science bursary board.

The webinar will be at 3:00 pm (GMT) and again at 8:00 pm (GMT) on Friday, January 13.

Registration information is available here: https://apecs.is/news/apecs-news/5114-antarctic-science-bursary-2023.html.

I look forward to welcoming you on 13th January 2023.

Cheers,

Shridhar

Opportunities

Hi all,

A few opportunities which I've come across lately which may be of interest to you:

We (the UKPN) are looking for a training officer to join the committee. The role would really be to help us develop (usually in collaboration) in-person and online training for polar ECRs. In the past this has ranged from fieldcourses in Russia to online infographic creation training. You certainly don't have to deliver it all yourself, the role is to support coordination and facilitate training! If you're interested, please reach out to me directly or email president@polarnetwork.org

Survey: 65% of ECR cost of living survey respondents so far say their income is not enough, or just about enough to cover their living costs - what about you? - Please consider filling in this survey: https://forms.gle/32MhFsShpQv7dtWU6

And if you have a few minutes, this undergrad research survey might be of interest to you: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfX8x4020-u1fZJzKF7BBblswiA9ZLnyQPOlymdLMaBLO6Nvw/viewform
