COURSE: Introduction to Metabolomics for the Environmental Scientist

Good afternoon all,

Please find a course below which may be of interest to you or your networks.

If you have any questions or queries, please do get in touch.

All the best,
David

Introduction to Metabolomics for the Environmental Scientist
27-28 September 2018

This 2-day NERC-funded Advanced Training Short Course will provide environmental scientists with an overview of the metabolomics pipeline. The course is intended for environmental scientist with little or no previous experience of metabolomics and who are interested to discover how this relatively new and powerful approach could be integrated into their research. Experts working in the NERC Metabolomics facility-NBAF-Birmingham will teach the course.

Topics covered:
  • Introduction to environmental metabolomics with case studies
  • Experimental design and quality control
  • Sample collection and preparation
  • Overview of analytical laboratory techniques (mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy)
  • Overview of data processing and statistics for metabolomics
  • Introduction to metabolite identification

  • Registration for non-NERC funded scientists: Early-bird £520, Standard Registration £580

Registration for NERC funded scientists: While this course is open to all researchers with an interest in the environmental sciences, it is a NERC-funded Advanced Training Short Course and hence priority will be given to NERC funded scientists; this includes NERC PhD students (highest priority), NERC PDRA's and Fellows (next highest priority) and principal and co-investigators who currently hold NERC funding. For these prioritised applicants, bursaries are available to cover the full cost of the course and one night of accommodation (which we will book for you) and up to £100 towards travel costs (which you should book).

Want to be a polar pen pal? Outreach with a minimal time commitment :)

    Hi Guys,

So we're setting up a new way to help link scientists and science support staff to schools – letter writing! The plan is that schools will be able to email one letter per class with questions/drawings from the kids. We will then send out the letters we receive to our motley gang of volunteers for them to write a reply, scan and send back to the school. Should be a really easy way to connect with schools, without the need to give up too much free time or travel. The school teachers we have spoken to so far seem very keen as a way to connect their kids with real scientists and support staff.

So, we need your help, are you able to respond to the occasional letter? At the moment we are not fully publishing the idea, just to make sure we don't get more requests than we can handle. And as long as we have plenty of volunteers, then should only be perhaps a letter month that we'd expect volunteers would need to reply to. Could even just be a few a year.
That's right, it sounds like a great way to give some outreach a go, but from the safe distance of your own home or office ;)

See attached the blurb we will be putting on the website and giving to some schools, and see what you think.

Please email education@polarnetwork.org if you are keen to be part of this polar pen pal initiative, then we can give more information about how we plan to manage letter requests. It would be great to get a nice range of people across disciplines with various levels of experience so we can field all types of questions about science and life working in the polar regions. And hey, if you like drawing, I'm sure schools would love some artwork back, or fieldwork photos :)

Thanks in advance for your excitement and enthusiasm to volunteer for this project ;)

This workshop will make your research easier! (Polar software, UCL, Sep 18)

    Hi UKPN!

    • Do you write any code?
    • Have you ever come back to your code from 6 months ago and had no idea why it doesn't work any more (or what it even does)??
    • Does your code mysteriously stop working overnight even though you're sure you didn't change anything?
    • Do you ever wish you could get back your lovely code from last week that worked just fine before you changed it?
    • Do you use (or will you use) any kind of software in your research at all?

If you answer yes to any of the above then this workshop is for you!* We are holding a free day long workshop at UCL on September 18th on polar software which will cover everything from version control and writing better code to specific software used in polar research. We have a range of brilliant speakers from academia, as well as some who have taken the software skills they have learnt from academia into industry.

Apply here now! Limited help with travel costs are available. Registration is free, deadline is August 31st. If you're not already convinced (and you really should be) there's free lunch too J

This workshop is for all early career polar researchers no matter your level of experience, masters, PhD and beyond and has been partially funded by the Software Sustainability Institute.

We also encourage participants to stay for our polar sciences hack day on September 19th- we will be joining with students from other disciplines (e.g. physics, computer sciences) to come along and work on some polar problems for a day so even if you don't think you're great at coding here is your chance to get some help from those who are, and put into practice the skills you learn during the workshop.

Any questions? Email me at s.buzzard@ucl.ac.uk

*If you answer no I really want to meet you/ persuade you to come and run this event...

    FREE Metabolomics Online Introductory Course

    Good afternoon all,

    Apologies for any cross posting.

Please find a FREE online MOOC in Metabolomics below which you may be interested in.

Metabolomics: Understanding Metabolism in the 21st Century
    Course Dates: 23 July - 17 August 2018
    *FREE online MOOC*

Metabolomics is an emerging field that aims to measure the complement of metabolites (the intermediates and products of metabolism) in living organisms. The complement of metabolites in a biological system is known as the metabolome and represents the downstream effect of an organism's genome and its interaction with the environment.

Metabolomics has a wide application area across the medical and biological sciences and is attractive to both new and established scientists. In this course we will provide an introduction to metabolomics, explain why we want to study the metabolome and describe the current challenges in analysing the complement of metabolites in a biological system. We will describe the interdisciplinary approaches adopted in the metabolomics workflow and demonstrate how the combined efforts of scientist's from different disciplines is advancing this exciting field. By the end of the course the learner will understand how metabolomics can revolutionise our understanding of metabolism.

Re: HELP PLEASE: volunteer for science day in Datchet

    Hi Anna,

A good friend of mine is a physicist and recently travelled to Antarctica as part of an all female international group of scientists. She has some wonderful images, and some lovely stories, as well as having visited some usually off limits research stations.

The following link directs you to a programme she has set up on her her return, bring awareness to both equality and climate change to under privelaged schools in Colombia. http://antartidaparavalientes.com/

She recently gave a talk at WWF in woking and is based in Guildford

If she is free, I’m sure she may likely be able to help out.

Would you like me to put her in touch ?

    Best Regards,

    Hi everyone,

We’re looking for someone to help out with this school visit request, coming up on 3rd July. It’d be really great if someone can help, they’re really keen and we are struggling within the committee to be able to find someone to do it.

Is anyone in the Berkshire/London area that would be able to help? The school will cover travel costs.

Doesn’t take much effort, just chat a bit about some of the cool experiences/life as a polar scientist/show some pictures, whatever you want really. The ones I have done have been a lot of fun J

If you could get back to me ASAP, that would be ace, as it’s only a couple of weeks away.

    Cheers

    Anna
