A good friend of mine is a physicist and recently travelled to Antarctica as part of an all female international group of scientists. She has some wonderful images, and some lovely stories, as well as having visited some usually off limits research stations.

We’re looking for someone to help out with this school visit request, coming up on 3^rd July. It’d be really great if someone can help, they’re really keen and we are struggling within the committee to be able to find someone to do it.

 

Is anyone in the Berkshire/London area that would be able to help? The school will cover travel costs.

 

Doesn’t take much effort, just chat a bit about some of the cool experiences/life as a polar scientist/show some pictures, whatever you want really. The ones I have done have been a lot of fun J

 

If you could get back to me ASAP, that would be ace, as it’s only a couple of weeks away.

Visitors to the Arctic enter places that have been traditionally imagined as otherworldly. This strangeness fascinated audiences in nineteenth-century Britain when the idea of the heroic explorer voyaging through unmapped zones reached its zenith. The Spectral Arctic re-thinks our understanding of Arctic exploration by paying attention to the importance of dreams and ghosts in the quest for the Northwest Passage.

The narratives of Arctic exploration that we are all familiar with today are just the tip of the iceberg: they disguise a great mass of mysterious and dimly-lit stories beneath the surface. In contrast to oft-told tales of heroism and disaster, this book reveals the hidden stories of dreaming and haunted explorers, of frozen mummies, of rescue balloons, visits to Inuit shamans, and of the entranced female clairvoyants who travelled to the Arctic in search of John Franklin's lost expedition. Through new readings of archival documents, exploration narratives, and fictional texts, these spectral stories reflect the complex ways that men and women actually thought about the far North in the past. This revisionist historical account allows us to make sense of current cultural and political concerns in the Canadian Arctic about the location of Franklin's ships.

NERC Engaging Environments: Future of Our Seas public engagement training opportunity

On June 12-14, we will be hosting a free NERC Future of Our Seas training event, at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban. It is the second event that the NERC Future of Our Seas project will be hosting in 2018, which takes a fresh and dynamic look at public engagement, going beyond traditional science communication approaches to include learning from psychologists, artists, creatives, media professionals, and community groups. We want to build on the growing, nationwide conversations about the future of our seas, and help researchers to develop new and exciting ways to engage people in their work.

Feedback from our previous event in Plymouth included:

Please join us on Friday 25 May from 1-3 pm in the Garwood Lecture Theatre (midway down the corridor of the first floor of the Wilkins Building - South Wing at the UCL Gower Street site).

Research Experience Placement for undergraduates

Dear colleagues,

 

We have a REP from SPITFIRE DTP that might be of interest to members of the UKPN.  If you could pass onto any interested undergraduates you might have that would be great.

 

It will be based at British Antarctic Survey for 10 weeks over the summer and involves working with both the Atmosphere, Ice and Climate team and the Space Weather and Atmosphere team.  The project will be looking at to see what the impact of space weather events are on the Antarctic atmosphere.
