Help shape the future of the UK Polar Data Centre

Dear Colleagues,

Do you use data from the polar regions? Or would you like to in the future? Help shape the future of polar data services by completing our questionnaire.

The UK Polar Data Centre (UK PDC) is one of the EDS domain-specific centres. It is the focal point for Arctic and Antarctic environmental data management in the United Kingdom. Based at the British Antarctic Survey, the UKPDC coordinates the management and preservation of polar data from UK research, and supports researchers in complying with national and international data standards.

We are keen to ensure our data services evolve and improve to meet the needs of current and potential future users. To help achieve this, we have designed a brief questionnaire that asks for feedback on current services, and for ideas about new services that users would like to see. This should only take a few minutes to complete.

We are also setting up a User Forum to get more in-depth feedback on new services being developed. If you are interested in joining this forum, please include your email address at the end of the questionnaire.

Complete the questionnaire to help shape the future of the UKPDC.

The questionnaire closes 15 September 2026.

Over the past year, we have delivered a ‘PolarSTEP’ field course in Yorkshire to 20 polar early career researchers, coordinated over 1000 flags from 260 schools heading down to Antarctica, attended science festivals and conferences and much more. We have many more projects planned for the next academic year. 

We are currently searching for enthusiastic early career individuals to fill the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Festivals Officer, EDI Officer, Social Media Officer (x3), Marketing Officer, International Collaboration Officer and Training Officer. 

All positions are voluntary, with differing time commitments and flexibility. Further descriptions of each role and the role requirements can be found on the webpage above.

The conference will run from the 9^th to the 11^th of September 2026 at Durham University and aims to bring together UK-based (and anyone visiting is also welcome) scientists from all Antarctic-facing disciplines so that we can collectively learn more about the great work being done and the challenges being faced.

Survey ECAMMS: Early Career Antarctic Marine Mammal and Seabird Researchers

DEAR EARLY CAREER SCIENTIST. Does your research involve Antarctic or subantarctic marine mammals and/or seabirds? If so, please continue reading!

We have created a survey with the goal of identify and quantifying Early Career Researchers (ECRs) who have conducted or are currently conducting research on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic marine mammals and seabirds, and to document the skills and expertise they have developed through their research. The survey aims to establish a stronger communication channel between the SCAR Expert Group on Birds and Marine Mammals (EG-BAMM) and ECRs who may be interested in contributing to large collaborative projects led or supported by EG-BAMM. Ultimately, it will also help create a platform connecting senior researchers with ECRs working on Antarctic and sub-Antarctic marine mammals and seabirds.

The results of this survey will be presented to EG-BAMM at the SCAR conference in Oslo at the EG-BAMM meeting (11:30-3:30 pm on Saturday, August 8 in Central Park B) and likely, published at a scientific journal.

Please do not complete this survey unless your research involves marine mammals or seabirds from Antarctic or sub-Antarctic regions.

The survey should take only a few minutes to complete. The deadline for responses is August 3.

Survey responses will be processed anonymously. However, if you would like to join the official ECAMMS email list, you may provide your name and email address at the end of the survey (section 5) and authorize their use solely for this purpose.

Invitation to participate in research on Polar Thigh

Dear colleagues,

My name is Natalia Jaromin, and I am an MSc Extreme Medicine student at the University of Exeter (UK) conducting research on Polar Thigh in Arctic and Antarctic environments.

This study aims to improve understanding of Polar Thigh by exploring its risk factors, clinical presentation, and field management in polar environments. As there is currently little published research on this condition, the findings will help strengthen the evidence base, raise awareness, and inform future prevention and management strategies in expedition medicine.

I am inviting individuals with experience working or participating in Arctic or Antarctic expeditions to complete an anonymous online questionnaire. If you have experienced, witnessed, or managed a case of Polar Thigh, I would be grateful for your participation.

Help shape outreach and science communication training for polar ECRs

Dear UK Polar Network,

A group of Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) from UKPN and other national committees of APECS (Association of Polar Early Career Scientists) are running a global survey on outreach and science communication in polar science.

We are collecting responses to understand what kinds of outreach and communication training polar ECRs actually need, what barriers we face, and what support would make it easier to get involved. The results will be used to help shape future training resources, and will also feed into a workshop at the SCAR 2026 Open Science Conference.

This survey is for all polar ECRs, including people who do not currently take part in outreach and is available in English, French, and Spanish.

Dear all,

I’m delighted to share the launch of the brand new ✨ Future Arctic Conservationist Award ✨

Fauna & Flora is offering early-career conservationists in Greenland and Northern Norway (Nordland, Troms, Finnmark and Svalbard) the opportunity to apply for a Future Arctic Conservationist Award of up to US$15,000. 

 Awardees will also join the @Conservation Leadership Programme’s global network of conservation leaders, gaining access to leadership training, mentoring and peer learning opportunities.

 Key eligibility criteria: 

🌎Projects must focus on species, habitats, or ecosystems that are identified as priorities for conservation action through Indigenous and local knowledge, community priorities, ecological significance, or recognised conservation assessments

🌍 Projects must last 3-12 months 

🌎 Projects must take place in Northern Norway or Greenland 

🌍 Project teams must include at least three people 

🌎 All team members must be early in their careers

🌍 All team members must be nationals of the country in which the project will take place, although one team member can be a non-national if this is clearly justified

🌎 Applications from Indigenous and local communities are particularly encouraged
