Many Faces of Environmental Science - Project at Manchester Metropolitan University

Hi,

I've been asked to share the following with you all:

Share your career journey and help inspire the Environmental Sciences talent of tomorrow.

Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) are seeking participants for their latest campaign, 'Many Faces of Environmental Sciences'; a showcase the diversity of talent in Environmental Sciences across the UK. This builds upon their successful campaign 'Many Faces of Life Sciences.'

The aim is to highlight a range of individuals from our wider community and their success stories. To inspire future students and help to raise aspirations, with messaging around success and progression no matter what someone's ethnicity, disability, gender, sexuality or background.

MMU are now looking for volunteers to be one of the 'Many Faces of Environmental Sciences'. This involves providing a short profile and photo for use across the campaign. Volunteers are welcome across from across any level of academic, operational and technical roles.  If this is something you would be interested in being involved with, please contact Samantha Boyd at Samantha.Boyd@mmu.ac.uk for more information by the end of January.

Cheers!

UK-Russia Arctic Science Priorities Conference, 18-19 February 2021

UKPN and APECS Russia invite you take part in the UK-Russia Arctic Science Priorities Conference, held online on 18-19 February, 2021.

Within the past decade a number of research events with particular relevance to the Arctic region and its people have taken place in various formats such as scientific conferences, stakeholder meetings and policy making sessions. While these larger endeavours have the capacity to discuss international collaborations, it is often smaller workshops that are able to successfully facilitate and foster bilateral links between individuals from both nations.

This event aims to promote and foster science connections and collaborations among UK and Russian scientists through providing a platform for extensive open dialogue on common goals and  priorities to build a road map for future Arctic research. It is anticipated that the roadmap will provide a tool to aid in the development of successful collaborations. We invite the UK and Russian science community involved in the Arctic research to actively participate in the conference and workshop.

Please register at https://forms.gle/w5fp7tcSe79cdgRV7 until 10 February. Final program and notifications will be sent to the registered participants on 15 February.

UK-Russia Arctic Online Conference 10-12 February 2021 - invitation

FW: Call for ECR conference help

Dear polar ECRs,

Early career researchers (ECRs) from the UK Polar Network and the Changing Arctic Ocean Programme are planning to host a two-day online conference in May 2021. The conference aims to showcase and celebrate polar research being done by UK postgraduate students and ECRs. As well as poster and oral presentations, there will be workshops with a strong focus on how to navigate career development given the current, dynamic research landscape.

The committee is entirely ECR led and they are looking for some volunteers to help with its delivery, both in the run up to, and during, the conference. Details for the roles are below. If you'd like to get involved or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact the conference co-organisers Holly Jenkins (hollyjenkins@soton.ac.uk) and Flo Atherden (flo.atherden@soton.ac.uk). Please indicate which role and which research theme you would like to help with.

This is a really great opportunity to gain some very relevant skills, and to bring your ideas to the forefront.

Committee positions:

We are looking for ECRs with expertise and interest in the following research themes to join our committee team:

  1. Oceanography
  2. Geology and Glaciology
  3. Atmospheric sciences

This role would involve: attending committee meetings approximately twice per month, reviewing submitted abstracts within your chosen research theme, organising and guiding session chairs within your research theme.

Session chairs:

We are looking for ECRs to chair the oral presentations during each of the talk sessions. We anticipate having parallel sessions covering the following research themes:

  1. Ecosystems (biological and ecological sciences)
  1. Oceanography
  2. Geology and Glaciology
  3. Atmospheric sciences

Ideally, we will have multiple session chairs per theme so that responsibilities can be shared across the two days. Session chairs would be responsible for: introducing speakers, keeping speakers to time, managing audience questions, supporting speakers with IT/screen share. Guidance on zoom hosting and meeting format will be given beforehand.

Decolonising Education - free online course

Dear members,

If you’re thinking about how to make practical changes in education, this free online course might be of interest to you. There are distinct legacies of colonialism throughout science education, and this course helps to recognise them and tackle them. It’s aimed at university academics and students, teachers, and leadership team members within schools, but suitable for anyone interested in the decolonisation of knowledge.

Thanks,

Holly

Reminder! Please fill out the SIOS Survey: Assessing impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on Svalbard science community

Hello UK Polar Science Network!

A reminder that SIOS-KC and RSWG have prepared a survey to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on the Svalbard science community during 2020. This survey will be used to develop a strategy for the upcoming (2021) field season in Svalbard.

We encourage all those who are associated with the Svalbard science community including researchers/scientists, research management staff, logistics operators, academics including students (PhD/Masters/Bachelors), and research station/facility/infrastructure staff, to respond to this survey. You will find more information here: https://sios-svalbard.org/News_20201209.

Deadline: Thursday 7th January 2021

It will take ~15 mins to complete the survey and consists almost entirely of tick boxes. We will present the initial findings of this survey during the SIOS Polar Night Week (11-15 January 2021)

On behalf of SIOS, we look forward to receiving your responses!

Will

Polar Horizons 2021 - apply by 25th Jan 2021!

******************************************************************************************************************************

The Polar Horizons 2021 scheme aims to bring more diversity to UK Polar Science.

The Diversity in Polar Science Initiative is running the successful Polar Horizons program again in 2021. In 2020 we reached out to UK students from underrepresented groups including, BAME, LGBTQ+ and Disabled students, to show them how fantastic UK polar research, engineering, and operations are and why they should be looking poleward in their future career.

In March 2021 we are doing it all again and this year the scheme is moving fully online, opening it up to the entire UK polar research community.

We invite early career researchers & students in STEM subjects from groups currently underrepresented in Polar Research (including BAME, LGBTQ+ & Disability) to be paired with Arctic & Antarctic scientists and engineers and join us for our program. If you are available in office hours, between the 2nd and 5th of March 2021 and want to learn about Polar Research, please apply here.

We have organised a four-day programme where we will introduce students to polar research through presentations, workshops, and conversations with individually selected and matched virtual hosts who are currently working on polar subjects!!

If you have any questions, please find more information here on the British Antarctic Survey website.

https://www.bas.ac.uk/project/diversity-in-uk-polar-science-initiative/uk-polar-horizons-2021/

If you are BAME/BIPOC, LGBTQ+ or have a disability and are interested in Polar science, engineering, technology (including AI), maths, policy, museum studies or operations in the polar regions, please apply here.

Please share this email with anyone that you think might be interested.

Look forward to receiving your application and seeing you in 2021,

The Polar Horizons 2021 Team
