Race Impact Survey reminder - closing this week
Dear UKPN members,
The survey below closes at the end of this week (25th October). Please spare a short amount of your time to give your perspective of equality, diversity and inclusion in polar science.
We are writing to invite you to complete a survey about your experience of equality, diversity and inclusion while working in the UK Polar research and operations community, particularly regarding race. Whether you have worked in the UK polar community for a long time or are only getting started, your experience is valuable.
We are undertaking this survey, through the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative (DiPSI), to gather key insights into racism and lack of inclusivity, and to move the response to racism forward in the UK Polar Community. DiPSI has highlighted the lack of diversity for minority ethnic groups in UK polar science in comparison to the wider UK population as an issue, and looks to consider the opportunities to improve from only 3% representation of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues.
We are asking for people in the community to share their experience and thoughts, so we can collate best practice responses and consider the next stage of development of the DiPSI programme. We will collate the results and publish them on the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative webpage, along with next steps.
This survey is for those who are currently working or have worked within the UK Polar Community, and should take ca 10 minutes to complete. Please forward it to colleagues and friends who also work and study in polar fields in the UK, or have done so in the past. The survey will close on 25 October 2020.
Thank you in advance for your participation.
On behalf of the Diversity in UK Polar Science Initiative,
Beatrix Schlarb-Ridley
Deputy Chair, DiPSI Steering Group

October 27th, 2:30 PM Washington DC time.
Smithsonian Event Breaking the Ice Ceiling:
Trailblazing Women in the Arctic and Antarctic Science
Register here: https://womenshistory.si.edu/events/american-women-science
Join for a panel to illuminate polar research and achievements by those who identify as women. The panel will foster discussion on the systemic changes in polar sciences to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, weave connections and collaborations between many roles in a social change ecosystem to develop tools and methods to reach new audiences and inspire the next generation of women polar knowledge holders, researchers, and scientists, and create a space that values and incorporates Indigenous women's oral histories and traditional knowledge as a fundamental component of scientific research. This discussion will continue in 2021 with a series of free monthly webinars showcasing past, present, and future trailblazing women in the Arctic and Antarctic online from The Arctic Institute.

Locked into ice: my scientific journey across the Arctic, 23 October, 17:00-18:00 UK time
What does it feel like to be locked in ice, drifting across the Central Arctic Ocean in the middle of the polar night? Why is it both fascinating and challenging to do scientific research from a frozen ice-breaker? How do you build an ice camp on a moving Arctic floe? What mysteries does the Central Arctic Ocean hold, and in what way are Arctic researchers helping to solve them?
Join us for a live-link with Dr. Markus Frey from British Antarctic Survey who has just returned from the MOSAiC expediton, the largest year-round multinational expedition in the Central Arctic Ocean, on 23 October, 19:00-20:00 Moscow time (17:00-18:00 UK time). Get an insider view into the life and work of an Arctic researcher.

Antarctic COVID-19 survey
Some of you may have heard of the SCAR Standing Committee on the Humanities and Social Sciences' Antarctic COVID-19 research programme.
As part of this research programme, we have prepared a survey to learn more about the impact of COVID-19 on the Antarctic research community. We warmly invite all Antarctic researchers, support staff, students, and anyone else involved in Antarctic research or logistics to complete this survey. Your response will help us to understand how we as a community are affected and will inform strategic decisions to mitigate impacts. Please share the link to this survey with your networks. Note that the survey is set to close by 8 November 2020. We appreciate your participation before that time. If you have any questions, please contact Andrea Herbert (andrea.herbert@canterbury.ac.nz) or Daniela Liggett (daniela.liggett@canterbury.ac.nz).
Thank you in advance for your support and participation in the survey http://canterbury.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_8qsgGl4oyuVjxQx.
All the best from Christchurch,
Daniela

UKPN Antarctic Flags project
If you are heading to Antarctica or any of the surrounding Antarctic islands this winter, we would love your help with our UK Polar Network Antarctic Flags project!
All we ask is that you take some flags (however many you are willing to take) sent to you as a .pdf or .jpg and photograph them in Antarctica as proof that they have made it there. How you choose to do this is totally up to you, you can be as creative as you like! We will then ask you to send them back to your UKPN committee contact who will arrange sending these back to the schools.
For more info, please visit https://polarnetwork.org/2020/10/join-us-for-antarctica-day-2020/ or get in touch at antarctica-day@polarnetwork.org.
Many thanks,
Jennifer (UKPN Antarctic Flags coordinator)
Ph.D. in ice/ocean interaction at British Antarctic Survey
Dear All
I am advertising a Ph.D. studentship at the British Antarctic Survey, joint with Cambridge University. The student will use high-resolution ocean modelling to understand the processes that control the melting of glacial ice. Full details are at:
<https://nercdtp.esc.cam.ac.uk/projects/CE218>
Please bring this opportunity to the attention of any talented individuals with a maths/physics background that might be interested in the project. Potential candidates are very welcome to contact me (p.holland@bas.ac.uk) with any questions about the project.
Thanks,
Paul
