Hi all,

Thank you all for your participation in the Cambridge event last week, I'm sure you'll agree it was a really productive time and I'm excited to see how the outcomes turn out. I've attached here the claim form and a reminder of Henry's instructions, if you could all fill this in asap that would be brilliant.

(And send them to arctic@bas.ac.uk<mailto:arctic@bas.ac.uk> not to me or any of the UKPN people please!!)

Thanks,
Sammie

Moscow event
Lunches on both the event days will be provided and paid for centrally, as will the event dinner on Thursday.
I think that breakfast is included in the hotel costs, if not, then of course people should claim it.
Max lunch allowance is £15, dinner (as needed) is £25
Claims should include the expenses from leaving home on Wednesday until the end of the event, including travel home. But not including any extra days in Moscow.
All original receipts/tickets are needed.
Claims should be submitted as soon as possible after the Moscow event - by 9 March latest please. One claim only please.
We had indicated a maximum budget of £1100. With lunches and dinner provided this should now be less. For budgeting here it would be really helpful if people were able to let you know what their likely rough total for flights/hotel/visa/other travel will be - say, by the end of the week? And if you could let us know the approximate total that would be excellent.

Cambridge event
Lunch on both days will be included, as will dinner on Thursday.
Allowances etc otherwise as above
Hotel accommodation - maximum of £120 per night, inc breakfast and VAT. Suggest that people book for two nights (combination as needed)
Russian participants will be staying at Travelodge Cambridge Central, Clifton Way, CB1 7DY (check-in Weds, check-out Sat)
Overall budget for hotel/travel/other per person should be around £300, but if significant travel/distance involved then this can be flexible.
All original receipts/tickets are needed
Claims must be submitted as soon as possible after the event - ideally in the day or two afterwards by email via printing, signing and scanning - in order for payments to be processed effectively this financial year. One claim only please.

Specific explanatory notes on the claim form below:
Point 1: Under council (1a), put NERC-BAS.
Point 2: Complete all details as fully as possible.
Point 3: Under Certificate by claimant, claimants must print out the form and sign it and either scan and email or send by post.
Point 4 - claimants can ignore, we complete this.
Point 5 - please make sure bank details are clear
Point 6 - just enter the details of claims.
Point 7 - if anyone is driving, they can claim mileage which is 0.45p per mile.

Reminder - All original receipts are needed in order to claim.

Many thanks

Henry

Re: Polar outreach activities during Edinburgh International Science Festival

Good Morning Sian,

I'm keen to help however have an interview Tuesday 10th and I realized yesterday that I have something on Sunday Morning that I can't rearrange but if you don't get other volunteers I can come up Sunday afternoon to  Edinburgh and leave Monday evening. Short turn around and interview hence flying.

I'm near Gatwick otherwise National express late or overnight. Accommodation, a youth hostel will do Sunday and/or Monday.

My outreach experience includes one or two years ago a children's Polar outreach event in Leeds. I helped set up and pack down and explained thermal expansion using someone's clever experiment of coloured dies in thin tubes put in cold and hot water. We also looked at melting ice in water.

I've also attended Polar conferences in Norway. Including 'Ocean Acidification, Bergen, 2013' and volunteered at Arctic Frontiers, Tromso in 2014 and 2016. I also produced and presented two posters. One on 'Search and Rescue in the Arctic' and 'Pollution from Shipping in the Arctic'.

Most recently I've been to BAS where I network and brainstorm with UK and Russian Young Scientists in Collaboration of our research.

For my MSc in Environmental Pollution and Protection at Lancaster I did a data research project on 'The behaviour of Organochlorine Pesticides in the Arctic'. My BSc from Reading was 'Rural Environmental Science'.

I currently work as a bacteriologist looking at Salmonella in farming. I aspire to get into Environmental Pollution research, particularly environmental fate and toxicology.  I have an interview next week for job as Hydrological Officer with the Environment Agency.

If you don't get any other offers, let me know. I expect flights /to cost about £70 ish each way and a hostel about £30.

Kind Regards

Jennifer

Dear UKPN,

Lorna Street and I are co-ordinating a two-day event at Our Dynamic Earth as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival focusing on polar science and living and working in the polar regions.

The event will run from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 8th and Monday 9th April. This will involve, amongst other things, displays and hands-on activities focusing on ocean acidification, terrestrial carbon fluxes, glacier and ice sheet flows, polar animals, and animals' insulation.

We are looking for volunteers to come and engage with the public, and show them the wonders of polar science and life. If you would like to take part, all you have to do is send me an email! You are very welcome to help out on one of the days or both. Please tell me your preference and I will draw up a rota that accommodates everyone.

Please pass this on to anyone else you think may be interested. If you are interested in bringing your own displays/exhibits/shiny science kit to add to the party, please feel free and we will work it into the program.

Looking forward to working with you and bringing our exciting science to the public!

Best wishes, Sian

Fully funded PhD - University of Hull- The Ecological Fate of Microplastic in Antarctic Marine Environments - A Source to Sink Approach

PhD opportunity:

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary on The Ecological Fate of Microplastic in Antarctic Marine Environments - A Source to Sink Approach

Project Rationale:

Our oceans are Earth's greatest resource but face unprecedented challenges from anthropogenically-derived plastic pollution, with micro- and nano-scale plastic particles of significant, and growing, concern. An estimated 15 Mt of plastic waste is discharged from terrestrial sources to the marine environment each year, with significant volumes dispersed within the wider ocean; either through the water column, locked within sediments on the ocean floor, or retained within living marine organisms.

There is little understanding of how these microplastics move through marine foodwebs. This is particularly evident in the Southern Ocean, thought to be one of the most pristine environments on the planet. Microplastic pollution has received little scientific attention in the Southern Ocean and it was thought that Antarctica was relatively free of microplastic contamination. However, Waller et al., (2017) found that the levels of microplastics in waters around Antarctica were up to five orders of magnitude greater than expected. We have no real understanding of where these microplastics originate from, how they propagate through foodwebs, through processes such as bioaccumulation and trophic transfer, nor their ultimate fate.

The project aims to quantify concentrations of microplastics in nearshore sediments, surface and sub-surface waters, and to analyse interactions between plastics and the wider shallow-water marine foodweb specifically by quantifying levels of microplastics in benthic and pelagic species through to higher predators.

This project aims to provide a baseline understanding of the presence and effects of microplastics on nearshore benthic and pelagic communities in the South Atlantic, including Ascension Island, the Scotia Arc and Antarctic Peninsula regions. It will consider transfer to and potential bioaccumulation in higher predators such as fish, seals and penguins.

Specific objectives:

1.     To quantify concentrations of microplastic particles in nearshore waters and sediments at sites around the Scotia Arc, the Falkland Islands and Ascension Island.

2.     To assess the interactions between microplastics and nearshore benthic and pelagic taxa

3.     To quantify levels of microplastics in higher predators (fish, seabirds and seals).

The outcomes will be delivered by the integration of innovative field and experimental research. Field studies will quantify the types and concentrations of plastics in marine organisms across the food chain, using novel techniques for the identification and aging of plastics in the marine environment. Mesocosm work will examine the influence of different concentrations of microplastics on the overall fitness of marine organisms (i.e. survival, behaviour and physiological mechanisms).
